SVP, Safety & Chief Compliance Officer

Annual salary: $271,900.00 - $305,800.00

What you'll do

  • As a member of the Executive Team, provide leadership, vision and strategic direction to a broad range of initiatives and
issues across BC Hydro, our shareholder, stakeholders and First Nations and contributes beyond own business group’s
objectives and success.
  • Collaborate across functional areas and engage employees and managers to develop innovative solutions and best
practices that position BC Hydro to achieve its corporate vision, priorities and objectives
  • The Chief Compliance Officer (CCO) develops and assures a risk-based, scalable enterprise compliance Governance
Manual to assign compliance responsibilities within BC Hydro, to set requirements for those business units with regulatory
obligations to satisfy their obligations and to ensure business unit compliance management processes are functioning
effectively and sustainably.
  • Additionally, the CCO has direct accountability for implementing the framework to mitigate Safety and NERC Mandatory
Reliability Standards (MRS) compliance risk enterprise wide.
  • Lead the development of company-wide annual compliance improvement plans that align with the 5-year Business Plan
and 5-year Safety Strategy, and meet the performance improvement objectives and commitment of the various business
units and the Executive Team.
  • Drive engagement and communication across the organization and through all levels of unionized and non-unionized
environments to continuously improve enterprise compliance, safety compliance and MRS compliance throughout the
organization.
  • Effectively lead and manage an engaged and matrixed workforce, appropriately champion a commitment to compliance
and sustainability, inclusive and harassment-free workplaces, operational excellence and efficiency, teamwork and people
development across all levels of the organization.
  • Manage the four departments that comprise the Safety and Compliance business group to effectively implement strategic
business plans, monitor and report results, and achieve financial and operational objectives within a complex organization.
  • Oversee the delivery of the web-based and in-person training programs that facilitate development of BC Hydro’s
technical and trades employees and contractors (including the trainee and apprenticeship programs), and enterprise-wide
safety and code of conduct training.
  • Develop and sustain the risk-based enterprise physical security framework that governs and ensures physical safety risks
of BC Hydro employees, property, and facilities are appropriately characterized, prioritized and escalated for decision and
approval.
  • Working with Technology, ensure emergency management, business continuity and disaster recovery plans are in place,
sustainable, exercised and current within each business unit. Alignment with the requirements of the Ministry of Emergency
Management and Climate Readiness and engagement to understand the emergency management needs of the
municipalities and First Nations is mandatory.

What you bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Sciences, Occupational Health & Safety, Business Administration, or a related
discipline is required. Masters/Advanced degree will be considered an asset.
  • A minimum of 10 years of progressive senior management experience within a large and complex environment. An
equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.
  • Demonstrated experience in leadership roles with responsibilities related to leading and directing operations (Field,
Technical, Engineering, Program Management or related), enterprise compliance, safety or risk management within large
utilities, natural resources, or manufacturing organizations, ideally within a regulated environment.
  • Demonstrated experienced building strategic external relationships with regulators, federal or provincial agencies and
other stakeholders.
  • Proven collaborative and agile decision-making approach in complex business environments involving competing interests
across the organization.
  • Proven influencing skills, change management, as well as superior communication and facilitation abilities at all levels and
across union and non-unionized affiliations.
  • Proven ability to form partnerships and leverage diverse perspectives to build and deliver integrated solutions across the
organization. Strong orientation and drive towards utilization of effective and agile methods to build in compliance
requirements to existing processes, procedures, and technologies.
  • Demonstrated strong compliance focus, including understanding of and experience with utility scale compliance programs.

  • Ability to establish a high level of rapport at all levels within a unionized environment and demonstrated experience
maintaining positive working relationships with Union representatives and other internal and external parties.
  • Proven ability to develop and implement long-term strategic plans that meet identified business requirements.
