Sow Farm Technician
A sow farm technician, also known as a Swine Technician or pig farm technician, is responsible
for the care and management of sows (female pigs) on a pig farm. Their primary goal is to
ensure the health and well-being of the sows and their piglets, as well as to maintain the overall
operation of the sow farm.
Job Overview:
A sow farm technician is responsible for the daily care, feeding, and management of sows and
piglets on a pig farm. This includes monitoring the health of the animals, assisting with the
birthing process, ensuring proper feeding amounts, maintaining clean and safe living conditions,
and performing various tasks related to the overall operation of the sow farm.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Animal Care:
Provide daily care to sows and piglets, including feeding, watering, and
monitoring their health and behavior.
Assist with farrowing and provide appropriate care to newborn piglets.
Monitor and help assist the overall health of the herd,
2. Facility Maintenance:
Ensure that the sow barn and facilities are clean, well-maintained, and conducive
to the health and safety of the animals.
3. Record Keeping:
Maintain accurate records of animal health, births, vaccinations, and other
relevant information.
Keep detailed records of feed and medication usage.
4 . Breeding Management:
Assist in the breeding process, including heat detection, artificial insemination,
and pregnancy checking.
5. Compliance and Biosecurity:
Adhere to biosecurity protocols to prevent the spread of diseases within the farm.
Participate in training programs related to animal care, safety, and biosecurity.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Previous experience in animal husbandry, preferably in a swine farm setting.
While experience is preferable, we have on site training for the individual that loves
animals.
Strong attention to detail and a passion for animal welfare.
Good communication skills and the ability to work well in a team.
