Reporting to the Supervisor, System Operations this position provides real-time operations of ATCO Electric’s electrical system and contracted assets within the Alberta Interconnected Electrical System (AIES). The position is responsible for the safe, reliable and efficient operations of the electrical system by maintaining it within acceptable voltage ranges and capacity limits. This is accomplished by coordinating switching, maintenance and construction activities involving the non-bulk electrical system, generation, SCADA and related communication systems within the company. This position is requires interaction with other interconnected utilities, rural electrification associations (REA’s), owners of distribution generators and customers to provide efficient service.
This position will be both supporting operations, as well as having dedicated time to support training towards the NERC certification.
What You Get to Do:
- Complete North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) Certification within 12 months. Dedicated time will be assigned to accomplish this.
- Operate, monitor and control the ATCO Electric interconnected electric system by acting as the Operator in Charge to coordinate operations with other operating entities, plan switching orders and performs switching of activity for all maintenance, construction, commissioning and restoration purposes in accordance with established policies, regulations, and work procedures.
- Prepare switching orders and perform/coordinate switching of the electrical system for maintenance, construction commissioning and restoration purposes.
- Monitor the ATCO Electric non-bulk electrical and communication system utilizing the operational tools, and respond notify and log events
- Operate ATCO Electric’s SCADA system relating to the electrical system, in compliance with the applicable regulations, policies, operating bulletins and standards.
- May also perform similar activities on the SCADA system relating to bulk electrical system operation under direct supervision.
- Under direction of the Supervisors, may also perform similar activities on the Bulk Electrical System (BES)
- Complete a risk assessment on the system prior to, during and upon completion of switching of the system
- Coordinates planned outage for construction, maintenance and commissioning on company facilities and interconnections with neighboring utilities.
- Logs all events as required by company policies and communicates statues of system during shift change
- Maintain awareness and knowledge of the administration of the joint operating agreements between utilities and generators.
- Ensure safe and timely restoration of the non-bulk electrical system following a system disturbance
- Update additions and changes to mapping applications as required and communicates mapping changes and corrections to associated external departments as required.
- Operates the ATCO Electric portions of the interconnected non-bulk electric system to ensure compliance with the applicable regulations, policies, procedures, operating bulletins and standards which include but are not limited to the:
- Alberta Electric Utility Act
- Alberta Electrical and Communication Utility Code
- Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) Operating Policies and Procedures o ATCO Electric System Operations Policies and Procedures
- ATCO Electric Electrical Operation Standards
- Has the authority to unilaterally take equipment out of service
- Investigate and provides input into incident reports
- Provide input into the System Operator Training Program
- Participate in appropriate training to effectively perform assigned tasks and responsibilities
- Review and provide input to internal/external policies, procedures and technical requirements for the operation of the electrical system
- Provide technical guidance to less experienced operators
- Other duties of a similar nature
What You Bring:
- Grade 12 Diploma or equivalent
- Certification as Journeyman Powerline Technician, Power Systems Electrician, Industrial Electrician or a Technology Diploma related to the electrical field from a recognized institute of technology
- Completion of Non-Bulk Operator Training Program
- 3 or more years related experience including in the operation of an electrical system
- Proficiency in the use of operational tools
- Thorough knowledge of the basic fundamentals of electricity
- Strong knowledge and background related to SCADA operation
An expectation of the System Operator I – NERC Training position may be required to provide after-hours stand-by duties. As such, you will be required to maintain a residence within the established service point boundary for Vegreville, AB to meet after-hours service coverage requirements.
