The Opportunity

Provide concise tourist information about the City of St. John’s and region to residents and visitors, and, provide excellent customer service to patrons of Departmental programs, services and facilities.

Accountabilities

  • Deliver visitor information in person, by telephone, email, fax and mail in a professional manner by providing current, high-quality tourist and general city information; assisting with map interpretation; assistance with tour itineraries as well as provision of information on tours, attractions, events, accommodations, etc.
  • Maintain daily visitor records, inventory control of tourism literature and replenishes as required.
  • Order tourist literature, promotional brochures, etc.; maintain tourism literature shelves including restocking and circulation of materials, and coordinates and supplies pertinent materials for information desks at conventions and other information desks as required.
  • Aid in general guidance and mentoring of casual staff in conjunction with the Supervisor, Tourism and Culture.
  • Provide off-site support as required in the form of temporary visitor information desk(s) and responsible for preparation of visitor information, related supplies, signage, etc. and arrangements for delivery of such to the site.
  • Perform administrative duties as required to support successful operation of the visitor information center and site/ building. This includes indoor and outdoor building checks, equipment checks, data entry, daily updates to information screens and message boards, daily email and/or facility log book reports, and receipt of facility booking requests.

Qualifications

Education – High School Diploma, College Diploma in: Tourism, Business or equivalent.
Specific Skills/Certifications –
  • Professionally responds to multiple requests made by the public in short time periods.
  • Conversational French will be considered as asset.
  • Working knowledge of Word, Excel or any other word processing package.
  • Familiarity with the internet for accessing information for Tourism Information counselling.
  • Strong communication skills to deliver verbal/written instructions accurately and quickly.
  • Addresses the Public and City Departments in a tactful, and diplomatic manner.

Relevant Experience –
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience working in the tourism industry in working with a tourism industry operator, tour or itinerary planner.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of customer service and/or sales experience.

Other –
  • Eligibility for Marine Transportation Security Clearance.
  • RNC Criminal Record Screening Certificate (or equivalent) - dated 2024.

Working Conditions

  • Office environment that is centered within a working team.
  • Dealing with members of the public.

Physical Requirements

  • Read and sit for an extended period.
  • Must have finger dexterity/grasping ability to operate issued equipment/devices, or a computer.
  • Must be able to lift and transport boxes and packages of visitor literature and support materials as well as visitor signage as the need arises.

Hours of Work

Rotating schedule 7 days per week
16 - 40 hours per week
Period of Employment: May 6 - October 14, 2024.
