- Act as a SPOC for the provision of the transportation contracted services to OPG by 3PLs for the delivery and movement of material and equipment to station locations. Assist and advise the 3PLs about making arrangements with dimensional load carriers, shippers, road authorities, police, OPG employees and local utilities to ensure timely and safe transportation of equipment and material. Provide OPG vendors and employees with transportation expertise and advice to create a positive process for any transportation issues. Assist in resolving any unforeseen problems that affect the timely delivery of equipment and material.
- Participate in facility planning and scheduling processes to stay abreast of scheduled and upcoming activities that will involve transportation of equipment and material. Review and make recommendations to the Manager on issues related to the transportation of equipment and materials.
- Provide functional advice and guidance to OPG personnel, 3PLs and suppliers on the regulations pertaining to the transportation of major equipment, product, dangerous goods and low level radioactive materials to ensure that all materials that move to and from any licensed facility comply with such regulations. Provide interpretation and application of various legislative acts, laws and regulations, along with Corporate, divisional and departmental policies and procedures related to such transportation. When directed by the Manager visit Generation Stations, vendor premises and 3PLs facilities to ensure that the contract requirements with the 3PL carrier are met. Assess that the delivery of equipment and material is timely, effective and efficient. Resolve low level issues arising out of these assessments, referring unusual problems to the Manager. Work with 3PLs, carriers and suppliers to develop, implement, manage and ensure compliance with their transportation procedures. Take corrective actions as required to ensure the provisions of agreements with 3PLs are adhered to and that OPG requirements are met.
- Represent OPG Supply Chain organizations in off-site meetings and field investigations where equipment and material are lost or damaged. Work with 3PLs, suppliers and divisional staff to resolve problems. As the single point of contact for the Supply Chain organizations at OPG facilities, provide direction and oversight for the packaging and movement of equipment and material. Provide support for OPG and suppliers on non-standard shipments. Provide information on specific packaging and identification accompanying documentation to 3PLs, suppliers and divisional staff.
- Provide training to and engage with suppliers' transportation departments to ensure they use the 3PLs automation technology (Freight Assist) to schedule the pick up and delivery of shipments. Coordinate with 3PLs to establish accounts and passwords for the suppliers. Make recommendations for enhancements to Freight Assist from feedback received from suppliers.
- Review OPG transportation for completeness. Perform shipping process record-keeping, including information retrieval for reporting purposes and data analysis. Assess OPG and external suppliers' loading and unloading facilities of the warehouses to ensure 3PLs warehouse profile database will provide that correct transportation equipment is sent. Keep abreast of regulatory changes relative to dimensional load deliveries, and inform affected OPG staff and the 3PLs of such changes.
- Provide notification to Manager, internal customers and stakeholders of incidents involving transportation of equipment, material products and dangerous goods including low level radioactive material in accordance with regulations and corporate procedures and recommend corrective actions.
- Assist in the preparation of training material and evaluate content for compliance with procedures and regulations. Coordinate with appropriate OPG organizations to ensure required training is delivered on a timely basis.
- Within the general context of the job responsibilities, make suggestions to Manager on how to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the department.
- Make recommendations to management for continuous improvement of the 3PL transportation contract. Track changes to show value added for revisions to the contract.
- Assist in the development of procedures for the creation and monitoring of transportation clauses on purchase orders. Verify funds allocated to line items in purchase orders. Monitor transportation spending and report to Divisions or Stations as required. Act as Supply Chain SPOC for Accounts Payable in the development and execution of acceptable formatting of invoices.
- Initiate SCRs and analyze SCRs raised by other departments to monitor and evaluate 3PLs and suppliers performance. Conduct Self Assessments to monitor and evaluate OPG Transportation performance. As directed by Manager, implement changes recommended by Self Assessments.
- This position will involve:

- Completion of Grade XII plus 2 years' further concentrated study.
- Requires knowledge of transportation systems and equipment, related mathematics and English as necessary to communicate effectively and negotiate with various contacts both inside and outside of Ontario Power Generation.
- Requires these skills to understand legislation, develop procedures, and practices in the area of the transportation of regular product, dangerous goods including low level radioactive materials.
- Requires good written and oral communications skills to prepare effective documentation and provide clear and concise instructions.
- Requires technical writing skills to prepare and review reports and documentation.
- Requires a good knowledge of traffic and transportation management, such as modes and methods of Transportation and packaging.
- Requires some knowledge of economics, commercial law and business practice to work with suppliers and 3PL in resolving delivery issues. This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired through the
- 8 to 10 years of experience in understanding of the procedures, systems, work practices, directives, documentation requirements and regulations associated with the operation, maintenance, packaging, and shipping of regular product, dangerous goods and low level radioactive materials.
- Requires on the job experience to become familiar with training programs, organization, lines of authority, and contracts associated with the operation of a Nuclear facility.
- Requires familiarity with Nuclear, Hydro and Thermal policies and procedures, including safety.
- Requires industrial traffic experience to understand rates, routing, materials handling and the various modes of transportation.
- Requires experience in traffic work to acquire an understanding of the various carriers and the economies to be gained through varying methods and routing.
