The Waste Services Branch is looking for Longhaul Truck Drivers to safely operate a tractor-trailer unit all seasons of the year on the pavement and muddy conditions at landfill and other disposal locations. You will transport different waste and recyclable materials from the Edmonton Waste Management Centre to various landfills and recycling facilities inside and outside the city limits.
What will you be doing?
- Drive vehicles through heavy city traffic and unload the trailer in uneven and muddy conditions
- Drive tractor-trailer units to and from regional landfill sites throughout Alberta
- Pick up and deliver tractor-trailer units from various locations
- Perform light maintenance inspections on trucks (checking oil, tires, air brakes) and complete electronic pre-trip inspection forms
- Follow policies and procedures of any facilities that material is delivered to
- Ensure all aspects of the daily operations on/off-site are carried out in an environmentally safe manner
- Clean and sweep truck tunnels and unit parking stalls, wash tractor-trailer units and/or other on-site equipment
- Complete electronic daily timesheets and operate two-way radios and cell phones
- Provide support for the reporting, verifying and documenting of any environmental incidents
- You may be required to deal with the public
Work Environment:
- Working in an outdoor work environment (rain, snow or shine)
Qualifications Required at the time of Application:
- Completion of Grade 10
- 2 years of experience operating tractor-trailer vehicles where the Gross Vehicle Weight exceeds 13,600 kg
Skills Required for Success:
- Knowledge of Waste Management Bylaws and other legal requirements of this position
- Demonstrated experience operating tractor-trailer units on pavement and in muddy conditions
- Demonstrated ability loading and unloading materials, vehicles and equipment with sufficient physical strength and agility to perform work assigned
- Ability to drive truck in designated weight range
- Ability to use electronic devices (Ipad/ desktop computer)
- Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions
- Ability to work independently under minimal or no supervision
- Ability to arrange own transportation and work a schedule that meets the business needs, such as early mornings

Conditions of Employment:
- Valid Alberta Class 1 Driver’s License (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
- Hours of Work: 80 hours bi-weekly, shifts are 13.33 hours, Monday - Sunday and working 6 days every 2 weeks
