Job description

Working together to provide outstanding integrated health care to our communities delivering best patient outcomes with exemplary standards and compassion, Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare (MAHC) is a multi-site organization that includes Huntsville District Memorial Hospital Site and South Muskoka Memorial Hospital Site.


ROLE

  • Provides non- medical support to front-line team members on-site at MAHC.

  • Will be deployed to various geographical areas across the hospital as the need arises at the discretion of the Program Manager.

  • Provide patients with companionship and emotional support.

  • Assist with patient watch duties, redirecting and monitoring patients who may be wandering and perform patient watch for patients who may be at risk of harming themselves or others.

  • Assist with feeding, as appropriate and delegated by a regulated health professional.

  • Assists with wayfinding and portering/transporting patients across hospital units in wheel chair or stretcher.

  • Assist with unit stocking and tidying, as required.

  • Answering the phone and seeking staff for support in questioning.

  • Alerting nurses when patients need help or intervention.

  • The Unit Aide adheres to personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements which includes gown, gloves, and mask at times, as directed by the healthcare team.

  • The Unit Aide must be able to withstand a significant amount of walking, standing, and general movement.

  • Assist patients with basic requests.

  • Refrain from performing medical procedures or any unauthorized actions.

  • Keep patient information confidential.

  • Adheres to hospital policies and standards.


REQUIRED EDUCATION & CERTIFICATION(S)

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent required.

  • BLS Certification.


REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE(S)

  • Physical and emotional health suitable for demands of patient care.

  • Able to work as a team member.

  • Have excellent interpersonal communication skills.

  • Able to organize tasks within time allotted.

  • Able to work efficiently, effectively and safely in a controlled environment.

  • Aware of and acknowledge limitations within the role.

  • Knowledgeable of the policies and procedures directly associated with role.

  • Maintain confidentiality.

  • Must attend training with Behaviour Support Assistant.


DESIRED SKILLS, EXPERIENCE(S) & EDUCATION

  • First Aide Certificate considered an asset.

  • Training in violent and aggressive de-escalation techniques would be an asset.

  • Training in Positive therapeutic communication techniques would be an asset.

  • Training in in proper body mechanics and positioning would be an asset.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION


Location: Multi site working at both the South Muskoka Memorial Hospital (SMMH) located in Bracebridge and the Huntsville District Memorial Hospital (HDMH) located in Huntsville.


Department: Inpatient (Med/Surg) & Rehabilitation Services


Hours of Work: Must be available to work shifts including days, evenings, nights and weekends. Shifts and hours may change according to departmental requirements per the collective agreement.


As a condition of employment, external hires are required to submit proof of COVID-19 vaccination to the Hospital’s Occupational Health and Safety department.
