Job description

GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

This position involves the safe operation and maneuvering of a vacuum/combo truck to provide municipal services in the areas of wastewater and water. The incumbent must be capable of working with minimal supervision, with orders to be received verbally and electronically as required. The operator will provide leadership on site to delegate tasks on site for successful job completion.

This position will also work closely with the Utilities team to perform preventative maintenance, corrective maintenance, cleaning and repairs on the water treatment, water distribution, wastewater treatment, wastewater collection and the storm water system.

This position includes duties such as but not limited to, compliance reporting, water and wastewater sampling, day to day operations in the water treatment and wastewater treatment facilities.

This position is also responsible for understanding all National Safety Codes (NSC) regulations for the operation of the Combo/Vacuum Truck in a safe manner. In addition, the position must understand and adhere to all worker responsibilities as outlined in the current Towns’ Policy and Procedures.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

This position reports to: Manager of Utilities → General Manager of Municipal Services → Chief Administrative Officer

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Safely operate and maintain vacuum/combo truck as required for the maintenance and/or repair of sewers, storm drains, waste systems, water lines or other as required.
  • Provide flushing services for but not limited to:
  • Waster water sewer main lines
  • Storm water sewer main lines
  • Assist in the repair and maintenance of Town owned facilities and infrastructure when requested.
  • Repair and maintain water distribution system, sewer & storm sewer collection system, while digging and repairing water mains, sewer mains and storm sewers, along with the respective infrastructure.
  • Performances of routine preventative maintenance on equipment operated and assist in mechanical repair of equipment and vehicles. This includes ensuring the cleanliness of equipment operated.
  • Ensure all work orders and paperwork is completed in timely and accurate manner. This includes but is not limited to; work orders, field level hazard assessments (FLHAs), pre-trip reports and all safety documentation as required.
  • Stays informed and up to date on all local, provincial and federal compliance rules and regulations. This includes, safe handling of hazardous materials and complying with all health and safety regulations for hazardous materials.
  • Attendance and participating in all staff meetings which includes but are not limited, toolbox talks, safety meetings.
  • Work with Utilities team to ensure assets and infrastructure in the utilities system are properly maintained and in in good working order.
  • Create and upload accurate electronic tracking and records.
  • Create maps in relation to maintenance schedules.
  • At all times act with professionalism and respect.
  • Provide excellent customer service to the community and work team to ensure all job requirements are met.
  • Perform stand-by and/or on-call duties as assigned or scheduled.
  • Other job-related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Minimum of five (5) years experience in Municipal Operations or equivalent in operation of heavy equipment, preferred.
  • Ability to operate vacuum/combo unit truck considered an asset.
  • Valid Alberta Class 1 or 3 Drivers’ License with Q-endorsement with less than six (6) demerits.
  • Ability to perform preventative maintenance of equipment being operated.
  • Experience in off highway driving and in chaining up procedures.
  • Basic computer skills
  • Experience driving in all weather conditions.
  • Confined Space
  • Basic Emergency Management, Incident Command Systems 100 (ICS100), or willingness to attain.
  • Willingness to work indoor and outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Willingness to obtain a level I and II certification in Wastewater Collection through Alberta Environment
  • Experience in or willingness to learn computer programs such as, but not limited to Serenic, Citywide, Workhub and ArcGIS
  • Ability to work in a team environment and collaborate effectively with team members and others.
  • Proven ability to provide high quality customer service and act with high levels of professionalism.
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Willingness to attend training sessions as required by the employer.
  • Willingness to work weekends and unscheduled hours during emergencies.
