The District of Hope is currently seeking one (1) Utilities Operator 1to join our team.Reporting to the Operations Manager, this position assists with the efficient operation and maintenance of public utilities and preventative maintenance programs by maintaining and repairing facilities and equipment, and supporting utilities staff by assisting in their duties, as required, to meet service expectations and departmental goals. Assignments and responsibilities are performed under general supervision in accordance with established routine. Performance is subject to review and evaluation by the Operations Manager and Director of Operations.
Responsibilities include; but are not limited to:
- Perform general operations and maintenance of water, sewer and stormwater systems.
- Perform general maintenance and repair tasks on grounds, facilities and equipment and
- support utilities staff by assisting in their duties.
- Perform a variety of manual labour tasks.
- Obtain and use a variety of materials, supplies and equipment for jobs.
- Read meters and submit information for billing in a timely manner.
- Participate in the standby rotation.
- General data input and other computer related tasks.
- Be an advocate of the District of Hope Health and Safety Program.
- Assist the Chief Utilities Operator with applying new and/or improved work methods, practices and techniques.
- Collect and submit water and sewer samples.
- Carry out a variety of other operational tasks as may be required from time to time, to include maintenance of roads, sidewalks, parks, and buildings.
- Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications include; but are not limited to:
Education
- Completion of Grade 12, augmented with successful completion of post-secondary education and a minimum of 1 year of experience in the municipal water and wastewater field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Excellent knowledge of English, spelling, grammar, punctuation and able to compose routine correspondence.
Licenses and Certifications
- The Utilities Operator 1 is required to have and maintain EOCP certification(s) at Level 1 Water Distribution, Level 1 Wastewater Collection and Level 1 Wastewater Treatment.
- Be in possession of a valid Class 5 BC Driver's License with air brake endorsement.
Abilities
- Demonstrate the ability to deal with the public in a courteous, tactful and diplomatic manner.
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing in the English language.
- Able to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other members of staff and the public.
- Able to work without direct supervision and effectively handle conflicting priorities and emergency situations (24hrs.).
- Able to work in a fast paced and multi-tasking public environment, while maintaining a positive demeanor.
