Role/Duties and Responsibilities:
The successful applicant will provide secondary students with exemplary nature/place-based/multiage learning experi-ences. This position requires great collaboration, flexibility, creativity, patience, and a passion for experiential, environ-mental, place-based & differentiated education. The successful candidate will play a significant role in fostering a deep connection to nature and encouraging an appreciation for conservation and sustainability. The successful applicant will collaborate with colleagues, parents and mentors to provide holistic, nature-based, experiential learning opportunities for students. The successful candidate may sometimes be working as the sole educator responsible for students. This position requires instructional hours outside of the norm. The role includes teaching courses in a multiage secondary setting and integrating the Saturna Ecological Education Centre (SEEC) with the broader Saturna Island community. An understanding and appreciation of living in a small, rural island community is beneficial.
Necessary Qualifications:
Documented evidence of:
• B.C. Ministry of Education Teaching Certification
• Exemplary teaching qualifications and experience in Environmental/Ecological Education
• Exemplary teaching qualifications and experience as a Secondary teacher
• Class 4 (unrestricted) driver’s license and safe driving record or commitment to obtaining (reference Policy & Procedure 705)
• Paddle Canada or Recreational Association of BC canoe & kayak leader certification(or commitment to obtain-ing)
• Valid First Aid Certification or commitment to obtaining certification
Applications should be accompanied by evidence of the following:
• Relevant master’s degree or in progress
• Recent school teaching and leadership experience
• Demonstrated success in implementing current pedagogical practices
• Experience supervising learning with a focus on instructional and assessment practices that maximize student development, engagement, and learning
• Ability to implement the goals in the District’s Indigenous Education Enhancement Agreement
• Working knowledge of the current BC Graduation Program
