JOB SUMMARY

You are responsible for conducting planned locates of the City's buried water and sewer infrastructure and providing other support related to the City's water and sewer infrastructure.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of Grade 12

Minimum of 3 years of experience in an operational environment

Training and experience providing underground utility locates is desirable

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES

Must obtain Water Meter Installer Certificate within the timeframe determined by the employer
Valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver’s licence (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated

KNOWLEDGE

  • Understanding of relevant sections of provincial legislation and regulations and City of Ottawa by-laws pertaining to drinking water
  • Unit and Section Standard Operating Procedures, operations manuals, processes and other documentation
  • Equipment and techniques used to locate underground infrastructure, and an awareness of underground utility lines and other infrastructure
  • Understanding of plumbing
  • Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including but not limited to the rights and duties of workers, Commercial Vehicle Operator Registration and MOL Hours of Work regulation.

COMPETENCIES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Complete all on-the-job training (e.g. confined space entry, driver training, roadway safety, etc.)
  • Effectively operate personal and handheld computers and related software (e.g. MS Office, Maintenance Management Systems software)
  • Meet deadlines
  • Review and understand maps, diagrams and sketches that show IWSD's buried infrastructure (e.g. water distribution system, wastewater and stormwater collection systems)
  • Prepare sketches of IWSD's buried infrastructure
  • Strong customer service skills, including the ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with contractors, homeowners, property owners, site supervisors of new residential developments and other staff
  • Good communication skills (oral and writing)
  • Work well independently and in a team environment
  • Troubleshooting and organizational skills
  • Willing to work overtime and on-call, as needed
  • Positive attitude

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Language Requirement: English oral, reading, writing
  • Police Record Check: The successful candidate will be required to complete a Criminal Records and Judicial Matters Check with the Police Services detachment in their jurisdiction to the City of Ottawa’s satisfaction.; Police record checks completed by a third-party company will not be accepted.
  • You may initially be paid 95% of your starting rate of pay, in accordance with the collective agreement.
  • Experience and formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability may substitute for stipulated academic requirements.
