ʔakisq̓nuk First Nation is looking for a full-time Water Operator (Trainee) to join our team. Reporting to the Public Works Manager, and working closely with the Lead Water Operator, this position performs entry level water and wastewater plant work which involves receiving training, education, and experience in water and wastewater treatment plant operations, monitoring, maintenance, repair of pumps, motors, treatment systems, generators, and related support systems. This position will perform all operational tasks and maintenance duties as assigned. This position will also collect, analyze, report, and process a variety of samples and obtain on-the-job training and guidance from the Public Works Manager and the Lead Water Operator.

Note: This position is full-time with a set weekly schedule, including work on weekends.
The primary responsibilities include:
· Perform servicing, operation, and maintenance of water distribution systems under the direction of the Lead Water Operator.
· Shadow the experienced Lead Water Operator for daily task understanding.
· Participate in formal training programs for water systems management knowledge.
· Conduct water sampling, testing, and inspection procedures to maintain water quality.
· Operate and maintain water distribution systems, including SCADA systems and equipment.
· Perform routine maintenance on distribution systems and assist in equipment operation.
· Complete daily work-orders, adhere to health and safety regulations, and maintain records.
· Provide emergency service during regular or after hours for immediate repairs and assessments.
· Respond to water distribution calls, ensuring a positive working relationship with customers.
· Attend training programs, certifications, and perform stand-by duties as necessary.
· Other duties as required.
Qualifications:
· Completion of an Operator-In-Training Certificate in any of these areas:
o Water Treatment; Water Distribution and Supply; Wastewater Treatment; Wastewater Collection
· Note: AFN is prepared to send the incumbent to complete their certification if they do not have one when applying for the role.
· Ability to physically perform the tasks associated with this role on a daily basis.
· Communication skills, specifically written, verbal and listening.
· Customer services skills when working with Nation members.
· Experience working with First Nations / Indigenous communities is an asset.
· Knowledge of language, history and culture of the Ktunaxa Nation is an asset.
· Previous experience adhering to safety regulations.
· Available for on-call rotation including evenings and weekends as needed.
· NOTE: A criminal check and vulnerable sector search will be conducted on the successful applicant
