What can I expect to do in this role?
In this role, you will:- install, service, replace and remove weather station components, power supplies, cabling, and telemetry equipment on site at fire weather stations or fire site locations
- install, maintain, and remove supporting structures such as towers, stands and equipment enclosures on site at fire weather stations
- maintain the grounds surrounding weather station sites (brush cutting / trimming) to ensure site meets accepted weather station standards
- identify deficiencies in existing station layouts, and design the layout of new stations
- troubleshoot defective sensors and electronic components and make repairs or arrange for repairs as appropriate
- instruct others on the operations, maintenance and care of weather station equipment
How do I qualify?
Mandatory:
- You must have a valid class 'G' driver's licence or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid driver's licence upon being hired.
- You must have the ability to lift objects weighing up to 50 kilograms from the ground to shoulder height unassisted.
- You must be able to fly as a passenger in helicopters and small aircrafts, work outdoors in inclement weather, and work extended hours and remain away from home for several days.
Technical expertise:
- knowledge of acts, regulations, policies and procedures such as weather station operating criteria, Fire Operations Plan, etc., to provide technical advice, monitor compliance, recommend controls and purchase services/equipment/supplies for the fire management and resource management activities
- knowledge of electronics and instrumentation to modify, repair or install Weather Instrumentation
Communication and interpersonal skills:
- proven communication skills to provide direction to staff; prepare and deliver presentations/training; prepare reports, correspondence, update manuals and fire operations plans; and provide input into other resource management plans
- interpersonal skills to deal with various internal and external contacts on weather operations
Planning skills:
- planning and coordination skills to prepare and revise (under changing conditions) daily work priorities, field visits and coordinate the deployment of materials, staff and equipment during normal and escalated fire situations to meet response objectives
- planning skills to provide input into operational plans (e.g. fire operations, regional weather plans)
Analytical skills:
- analytical and evaluation skills to assess new equipment and technologies for operational use and to assess operations plans and procedures to determine requirements for changes and improvements
- ability to operate within a rapidly changing fire emergency environment and dealing with multiple projects/assignments
Computer and equipment proficiency:
- proficiency with common office productivity software such as databases, word processing, electronic mail, internet, to collect, analyze data, prepare correspondence, spreadsheets, input and retrieve data
- ability to utilize a wide range of technical instrumentation, including digital cameras, scanners, GPS and low band radios
