Well ReadBookstore Manager

Nanaimo Literacy Association, operationally know as Literacy Central Vancouver Island (LCVI) was incorporated in March of 1990 as a community-based not-for-profit and registered charity. For 30 years LCVI has been offering literacy programs that support community based learners in the Central Vancouver Island region. LCVI is also a social enterprise, operating Well Read Books, a used bookstore located on Commercial Street in downtown Nanaimo, with book sales directly supporting learning programing.

We are currently looking for a new member to join our team; we are seeking a creative and energetic individual to take on the challenge of being the manager of “Well Read Books”.

The Bookstore Manager is dedicated to the mission of the Nanaimo Literacy Association (Literacy Central) and has the responsibility for managing LCVI’s social enterprise Well Read Books. Well Read Books is Literacy Central's major source of funding for our free literacy tutoring programs. The manager has the responsibility for planning, directing, coordinating and supervising staff and volunteers and business activities of the bookstore and ensuring the maximum sale of books and other retail merchandise. The later includes the development of social media and related marketing efforts to build foot traffic and sales.

Key responsibilities:

Bookstore Manager:

· Coordinate work schedules of bookstore staff and bookstore volunteers

· Supervises Bookstore staff and bookstore volunteers

· Conduct and complete annual staff performance reviews

· Oversee employees and provide feedback and support when needed

· Ensure good communication between staff through such means as providing input into newsletters

  • Coordinate and complete volunteer orientation sessions; collect, update and maintain onboarding documents related to volunteer recruitment

· Coordinate and facilitate bookstore staff and volunteer meetings

· Initial point of contact for bookstore volunteers and trouble shoot issues that may arise

· Order retail merchandise and insure that store selection closely reflects needs and desires of local customer base.

· Manages bookstore consignment; explore and recommend avenues for expanding the range of items sold in the bookstore.

· Deal with shipping of books and receiving payment through Biblio (Rare and collectible books) with support for Admin assistant

· Ensures shelves and other displays are stocked, and maintained

· Market and promote the bookstore through LCVIs social media platforms,

· Develop and implement with bookstore staff marketing ideas for bookstore including sales, promotion, special events, membership appreciation day etc.

  • Be aware of all programs and personnel of Literacy Central in order to provide information to customers, learners, tutors and the general public.
  • Attend once a month LCVI program meeting

· Customer Service: direct customer interaction including modeling best practices in customer welcoming and service provision, and dealing with complaints and concerns

  • Reconcile cash sheet with sales receipts, POS summary and bank deposits.

· Conducts and completes annual performance reviews

· Managing the processing of book donations

· Achieve store sales budgets; monitoring store sales; preparing sales updates for the executive director, and exploring ways in which to improve revenues

· When required, actively seek out qualified candidates or potential position vacancies; participate and lead the staff recruitment process under the direction of the Executive director

· Scheduled shifts as required; provide emergency shift coverage if needed; arrange coverage as needed

· Prepare reports to be shared with LCVI Board of Directors; at least once a year present an update and information session to the Board of Directors at a regular Board of Director meeting

· Report on a weekly basis to the Executive Director

· Review sales and adjust to achieve monthly revenue targets

· Plan and oversee promotions and events to help achieve and surpass sales targets

· From time-to-time based on operational considerations, assist with administrative tasks at the request of the Executive Director including:

-Order and distribute common supplies (paper, pens, stationary, cleaning supplies

-Acting as first contact for telephone an in-person inquiries

-Oversee scheduling of events and space in the Learning Center

-Assist with meeting, greeting and directing clients, visitors and partners to appropriate LCVI staff

Other duties as requested by the Executive Director.

Qualifications Required:

· 3 years+ of bookstore/retail experience

· Point of sales Experience

· Experience working with volunteers

· Excellent customer service skills

· Computer literacy required: Microsoft word/Excel/Outlook

· Marketing experience using social media platforms and print

· Knowledge and experience with graphic design platform Canva, or similar platforms an asset

· Ability to organize and prioritize workload

· Supervisory experience an asset

· Effective verbal and written communication

· Experience with not-for-profits an asset

Terms and Conditions:

· 30 hours per week

· $23.00 to 25.00/hour

· Candidate may qualify for benefits after the completion of the probationary review

· Additional hours may be available if staff retail coverage required
