ABOUT THE ROLE
TransAlta is currently looking to hire a temporary Settlements Analyst to join our Energy Marketing (EM) Settlements team. Reporting directly to the Supervisor, EM Settlements, you are accountable for providing invoicing, billing, settlement, and support revenue assurance activities related to Energy Marketing transactions. This position ensures accurate calculation of invoices, timely billing to TransAlta's customers, payments to TransAlta's Vendors, and correct recording of financial entries within the accounting software. This is a terrific opportunity for someone who adapts readily to changing priorities, and business conditions, has a passion for the efficient production of accurate financial statements, and strives for continuous learning, as the role grows and adapts to today's technology-centric environment. This position offers advancement opportunities to grow within the broader shared accounting services team.
This is a temporary 6-month position based at our new office in Downtown Calgary. The role is hybrid with in-office days Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
Efficient and timely investigations of discrepancies resulting from settlements and invoicing activities; accountable to find and coordinating solutions through communication with cross-functional units in Energy Marketing and external counterparties;
Understand electricity pool settlement & apply market knowledge to produce accurate statements and backup details in a timely and accurate manner;
Apply knowledge of Sarbanes Oxley controls, compliance procedures, regulatory impacts, and internal policies and escalate business or system risks to leadership as required;
Manage small projects & growth deliverables, while meeting or exceeding operational targets and metrics;
Work independently and as a team player, providing backup, and support and taking on additional responsibilities to contribute to the overall success of the Energy Marketing Finance department;
Effectively understand and solve complex issues in a timely manner;
Monitor receivables to ensure payments are received and properly allocated while following up with customers on outstanding balances;
Update and maintain a payment calendar to ensure that cash can be properly forecasted and managed;
Assist accountants with variance analysis and explanation of financial results as required.
WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU
2 - 5 years experience in Energy Marketing, commodities trading, or power industry;
University Degree, college, or related power/gas industry experience preferably in accounting, finance, economic, and risk fields;
Demonstrated ability to problem-solve and be accountable to resolve issues & and troubleshoot independently;
Strong communication skills and ability to develop effective working relationships within TransAlta and with its external counterparties;
Demonstrated proficient technical abilities using Excel and querying databases (SQL, VBA);
Proficient in learning to use software, tools, and systems to create efficiencies in daily work;
Ability to manage multiple time-sensitive business user deliverables;
Takes pride in ensuring the work is completed on time and with a high degree of accuracy;
A growth mindset, with the ability to continuously learn and adapt to changing circumstances;
Understanding and compliance with internal policies; familiarity with SOX controls.

Experience with ETRM systems/Allegro/Horizon/ SAP
Process automation experience (RPA)
Understanding of financial markets
