Rainy River Mine
Situated in beautiful northwestern Ontario, 65 km northwest of Fort Frances, the Rainy River Mine is an open pit, gold and silver producing, residential mine site.
The Rainy River Mine, located adjacent to the Ontario / Minnesota border is 65 Kilometers northwest of Fort Frances, Ontario and is situated half way between Winnipeg, Manitoba and Thunder Bay, Ontario The area is home to more than 130 species of birds and large populations of moose, black bear and deer. If you enjoy outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, winter sports and lake country then this is an area you will love to live and work in.
Schedule: Shift 14 days on & 14 days off – 12-hour days
Position Reports To: Senior Metallurgist
1. POSITION OBJECTIVES
The key objective of this position is to direct and perform laboratory tests in order to produce reliable and precise data, safely.
2. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Safety and Environment
Ensure that all workers carry out their duties as required by the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Regulations and procedures of this company.
Provide all employees with a safe and healthy work environment by ensuring proper training, following and understanding of the operating procedures, personal protective equipment, operation of equipment and effective communication.
Participate in accident investigations as required, inspections, tours, Take 5 safety cards and forward them to the appropriate personnel.
Ensure all hazards are reported and investigated in accordance with relevant procedures and appropriate remedial actions implemented in a timely manner.
Ensure accident prevention practices are maintained by reviewing and recommending improvements and procedures.
Spend 50% of time in field with workers, providing coaching and support using existing systems in place. i.e.: Take 5 card reviews, IRS system, JTO.
Chair daily crew safety meetings, review and document all meeting details.
Complete 100% of the requirements within the monthly/annual safety package and maintain documentation.
Review and sign Take 5 cards with each employee daily and in the field.
Demonstrate a personal commitment to Safety, Health and Environmental responsibilities
Any additional tasks as requested by your Supervisor
Planning
Co-ordinate and support planning to achieve agreed targets.
Plan and prioritize daily and weekly work flow based on the needs of the operation.
Ensure QA/QC programs are in place for the laboratory facility.
Make detailed observations; analyze data and interpret results.
Production
Direct and perform laboratory tests in order to produce reliable and precise data.
Ensure that accurate record and report data from all analyses and tests is produced in the prescribed timeframe.
Ensure laboratory productivity meets the needs of the business.
Perform physical inspections of Assay Lab to determine if work meets company standards.
Carry out routine tasks accurately and following strict methodologies to carry out analyses.
Resolve any technical problems relating to equipment.
Ensure all work completed supports activities of the subsequent shifts to maintain Laboratory production levels to standard.
Recommend measures or changes to improve production methods, equipment performance and use of equipment to increase efficiency of department.
Management
Enforce compliance consistently and fairly for all applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
Ensure all Mill and Assay Lab policies and procedures are issued when required. Make recommendation to the improvement of the policies and procedures to reflect changes to the Assay Lab department.
Provide reports as required for decision making, period reporting and budgeting purposes through e-mail, computer requirements and additional required data entry.
Provide input in the development of Assay Lab budget.
Know your goals and targets. Make sure your Team knows them as well.
Perform annual employee evaluations before the end of each year.
Complete month end reports on a timely basis.
Maintain a monthly time sheet and forward by month end.
Manage all overtime to 5% or less
Manage manpower within the 20% absence rule.
Business Improvement
Keep up to date with technical developments, especially those which can save time and improve reliability.
Actively support the Business Improvement initiatives in order to improve all areas of the mine. Ensure that these activities are aligned with the business model of the company.
Use the tools provided by the BI department to document and implement new ideas.
Promote active support from the crews with regards to the generation of new ideas.
Human Resources
Ensure that all employees have the competencies and qualifications required to work safely and productively within the areas of responsibility, and that they understand and comply with the requirements of their position description.
Manage all aspects of the employee handbook so that it is followed and applied fairly and consistently.
Approve track and report employee vacation, overtime and absence.
Support and apply the disciplinary system as required.
Recognize opportunities to support and/or promote training for personal development.
Communication
Communicate with Superintendent, Metallurgists, Mill Supervisors, Geology personnel and all personnel to review job progress and process, resolve problems, and recommend priorities and corrective measures to improve operations and conditions of workplace.
Review work with crews.
Maximize time in the workplace.
Host and actively participate in crew, department, pre-shift, and supervisor meetings in order to establish priorities, receive and give accurate and timely feedback.
Communication with contractors.
Competency, Knowledge and Skills
Minimum 5 years of experience working in a gold Assay Lab with a minimum of 3 of those years in a leadership position.
Knowledgeable in Microsoft suite of software (Excel, Word, Outlook, etc)
Strong understanding of WHMIS and SDS
Knowledgeable in health, safety and environmental standards
Knowledge of laboratory techniques, terminology, equipment and materials.
Knowledge of the principles and practices of chemical and physical testing and analyses including the preparation of materials, equipment and samples.
Knowledge of data processing.
Ability to use and maintain laboratory equipment for standard physical testing.
Ability to understand and follow written and oral instruction.
Must have good written and verbal communication skills.
Manage time effectively.
Sound analytical thinking, planning, prioritization and execution skills.

Strong prioritization, organization and reasoning skills
Strong problem-solving skills
Ability to respond appropriately in pressure situation with a calm and steady demeanour.
