The Opportunity
We are looking for an experienced, qualified credit professional, capable of independent activity, ability to influence agriculture banking team and support departments leaders, and leadership of a team. This leadership role provides strategic and operational direction for the entire agricultural Portfolio Management team, with direct oversight of specialists. The successful incumbent will support the agriculture banking sales team across Canada.

Areas of focus
Effectively manage deal administration in achieving financial targets for agriculture banking team
  • Provide leadership of the Agricultural Portfolio Management team to support achievement of financial objectives through effective and timely credit underwriting for new and existing borrowing opportunities, while balancing risk and reward in line with CWB’s risk appetite.
  • Assist the team in identifying full-service solutions for clients with the view to be every client’s primary financial partner.
  • Support in optimizing overall profitability of relationships with new and existing clients based on return guidelines, customer risk profile, total banking relationship, and competitive environment.
  • Provide approval within agriculture banking’s delegated credit limits.
  • Actively refer to other business partners both within Canadian Western Bank and across CWB Group.
  • Responsible to ensure the safety of the Bank’s funds through proper AML/KYC practices and loan Portfolio Management with focus on loan quality, exposure limits and security requirements.
Managing credit activities within enterprise risk appetite
  • Manage credit activities using proactive risk management, including appropriate/timely monitoring, due diligence and recommendations.
  • Ensure required reports and financial data are received and analyzed promptly in accordance with loan commitments.
  • Assist with management of negative trending accounts with consultation with AVP, SAMU, as required.
  • Work with the Agriculture Banking leadership to ensure appropriate balance between growth and profitability in consideration of goals and CWB risk appetite.
  • Minimizing regulatory compliance and operational risk.
  • Coach team to adhere to CWB policies/procedures and Code of Conduct keeping up to date with any new or revised guidelines.
  • Act as an agriculture lending subject matter expert, including relevant industry and market trends and the associated credit structuring.
Leadership
  • Overall accountability for management and engagement of agricultural Portfolio Management team.
  • Establish a positive work environment that supports an engaging, high-performing and diverse workforce.
  • Act in the place of the Sr. AVP & National Lead Agriculture during absences from the team.
  • Change Ambassador
  • Coach and develop team in areas such as risk assessment, underwriting, credit structuring and credit presentation skills.
  • Provide ongoing training and career development for the team.
Education
  • Bachelors’ Degree in business or related discipline
  • Financial designation or graduate level studies preferred
Professional Experience
  • 10+ years financial services experience within functions of risk management, banking and/or business lending, including direct experience in agriculture banking, agriculture risk, syndicated lending, M&A financing, cash flow structures, leading people and managing teams
  • Experience in credit adjudication supported by well-developed skills in financial statement analysis and knowledge of effective risk mitigation strategies for agricultural credit underwriting
  • Demonstrated acumen in team building, leadership, coaching, mentoring, communication and planning skills
  • Developed network in the agricultural sector

  • Exceptional financial analysis skills to ensure credit structures are within CWB’s thresholds for risk.
  • Subject Matter Expert in commercial lending specifically as to how it relates to agriculture, while continuously building knowledge and staying up-to-date with industry trends and industry key risks.
  • Proven ability to provide effective leadership and coaching to teams responsible for credit adjudication, underwriting, and administration of loan portfolios.
  • Strongly established interpersonal, cooperation and negotiation skills.
  • Recognized analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as sound judgement and productivity management.
  • Very strong influencing and collaboration skills with the ability to work across business units and corporate office departments.
  • Exceptional verbal, written, communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Expert knowledge of collateral security and documentation requirements.
  • Strong computer and business modeling skills.
