About the role

As a Java Developer Co-op/Intern, you will participate in a 16-month placement to gain valuable, first-hand, corporate and professional experience at the largest provider property and casualty insurance in Canada, and a leading provider of specialty insurance in North America

What you’ll do here:

  • Innovate and develop on mission-critical financial systems to meet users' needs
  • Code in a mainstream enterprise stack:
    • Java, JDBC, Hibernate
    • REST API, SOAP web service, Spring Boot, Spring framework
    • Oracle, PL/SQL, MongoDB, ElasticSearch
  • Gain proficiency with IntelliJ / Eclipse and other development tools
  • Contribute in Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) application development using GitHub, Docker and OpenShift environments
  • Create applications using industry standard development methodologies, such as Agile/Scrum/Kanban
  • Become an effective member of a real-world project and collaborate with a network of people to contribute to its successful completion on time and on budget
  • Provide proactive and reactive support for production systems to guarantee their functionality
  • Resolve Incidents, Defects and Problem tickets by finding creative solutions, solving complex problems, coding, testing, and debugging a wide variety of systems
  • Be creative and come up with ideas to improve our services and user experiences

You will also have the chance to:

  • Explore new ideas and learn about best practices in a fun, inclusive environment
  • Put your creative mind to work while you help the team solve problems and contribute to challenging, meaningful projects

What you bring to the table:

  • Currently pursuing a university degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field
  • Available to work with us for 16 Months from May 2024 to August 2024 
  • Must be returning to full time studies in 2025 following the internship
  • Preference for student graduating in 2025 and enrolled in a formal co-op/internship program
  • Familiarity with:
    • Building server-side apps using Java 8+, JDBC, Hibernate
    • Creating web services or APIs using REST (and or SOAP), Spring Boot, Spring framework
    • Relational databases like Oracle (and PL/SQL) and No-SQL databases such as MongoDB or ElasticSearch
  • Students with a passion for learning about application development practices and methodologies
  • A “can do” attitude, passion for problem solving, and the ability to take initiative
  • Basic coding experience is an asset
