Duties:
The Building Maintnance Worker work as part of the Facilities Services department in operations and maintenance of University buildings, equipment, and grounds.
Duties may include, but are not limited to: grounds maintenance, replacement of exit and emergency lamps; inspect, repair and/or replace circulation pumps, sump pumps, roof top units and air handling units, heat pumps, hot water tanks and other related equipment; inspect and maintain air compressors; install, assemble, move and/or repair office and classroom equipment; inspect, test and coordinate refills of fire extinguishers; inspect and maintain emergency eye wash and shower stations; repair leaks and clear plugged sewers / drains; inspect exterior building envelopes and roofs for possible signs of failure and rectify as possible or make recommendations for repairs; repair, inspect, adjust door locks, panic hardware, and equipment associated with doors; maintain access system hardware; assist in coordinating the work of service providers; install and evaluate seismic restraint devises; safe use and operation of manual and power hand tools; paint and repair drywall; install and remove whiteboard, bulletin board, tack board; install shelving; repair / replace toilets, sinks, faucets, flush valves, washroom dispensers and other equipment associated with plumbing systems.
Position may include frequent exposure to undesirable environmental conditions such as confined spaces, attic spaces and outdoor work in inclement weather. The position also requires the use of safety equipment when appropriate.
Respond to emergencies and after-hours requests (part of emergency response team and snow/ice removal). This position is included in the Operational Needs group (CUPE Article 28.12).
Required Qualifications:
Building Environmental Systems Technology Certificate or equivalent Building Maintenance-related certificate. Minimum five years' relevant experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered i.e. applicants with an extensive background in performing commercial mechanical maintenance under the mentorship of a qualified HVAC mechanic, a ticketed HVAC/R journeyperson or a late-stage apprentice/technician with no working experience outside of their certification.
- General HVAC working experience.
- General Building Maintenance experience.
- Must be physically fit as work requires the performance of duties resulting in physical fatigue caused by Frequent moderate physical activity and intermittent periods of heavy physical activity.
- Must possess a valid Class 5 BC Driver's License and have a confirmed satisfactory driving record.
