Job description

Daily Bread Food Bank works towards long-term solutions to end hunger and poverty and runs innovative programs to support individuals living on low incomes and experiencing food insecurity. Daily Bread distributes fresh and shelf-stable food, and fresh-cooked meals to 132 member agencies and 207 food programs across Toronto. Daily Bread also publishes the influential Who’s Hungry report - an annual survey measuring trends in food insecurity and poverty in Toronto.

Reporting to: Food Services Manager

Location: 191 New Toronto Street, Toronto, ON, M8V 2E7

Salary: Starting at $46,000 per year; commensurate with experience

Terms: 35 hours a week / Permanent – full-time, on-site

The Position

The Cafeteria Cook is responsible for assisting the kitchen staff in the operation of the Daily Bread kitchen which primarily involves the preparation and service of hot lunch in the on-site cafeteria to staff and volunteers. The Cafeteria Cook is also responsible for general cleaning and maintenance of the kitchen and cafeteria area.

An average day in the kitchen would include prepping and setting up for lunch, serving lunch, and then cleaning, organizing, and doing some prep for the following days’ service. A lunch service typically serves 150 people, with the occasional additional school/corporate volunteer groups

Responsibilities

  • Assist in all areas of the kitchen and cafeteria with meal preparation for meal programs and cafeteria meal service in the cafeteria.
  • Supervise and direct volunteers in various prepping, cooking, and cleaning tasks.
  • Receive and store food and produce orders and help with inventory control.
  • Actively participate in the ongoing cleaning of the kitchen, cafeteria, and storage areas each day.
  • Occasionally, support the production team with meals for distribution to member agencies.
  • Assist in other kitchen duties as assigned.

Education/Experience

  • Culinary Education or an equivalent 5 years’ experience in a culinary role is preferred.
  • Valid Food Handlers Certification.
  • High performance standards and commitment to continuous improvement.
  • A team player with good interpersonal skills that thrives in a diverse work environment.
  • Ability to multi-task and effectively manage time and stress.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Basic computer skills and knowledge in Microsoft and similar products.
  • A commitment to providing excellent customer service.
  • A passion for food.

Work Environment

This is a physically demanding job. There is constant standing, bending, and stretching; a need to operate a manual pump truck to move skids of unprepared and prepared food (training will be provided), going into walk-in fridges and freezers for short periods of time, and a requirement to lift to 50 lbs. Some evenings and weekends as required.
