Responsibilities:
- Working with Wood, PVC materials, and aluminum to apply decking, hinges etc to complete quality dock systems.
- Understand and able to identify all materials used in wood shop
- Provide leadership and support to crew members to ensure productivity and quality
- Monitor crew member’s habits and work ethic and report to VPP any disciplinary issues.
- Ensure safe work practices are being met with your crew-lead by example
- Train less knowledgeable technicians on proper use of tools and equipment
- Operate and set up all wood shop Equipment
- Perform layout on material for cutting, slots, holes
- Perform fitting with and without fixtures, jigs
- Fabricate jigs/fixtures to speed up production
- Ensure shop deadlines are met and take corrective measures if necessary
- Able to review drawings s and specifications to ensure they function as designed
- Perform on the spot modification/fabrication if needed
- Recognize design flaws and take measures to correct
- Assist in training and direction to wood shop employees
- Use of materials as cost efficiently as possible
- Talk with customers and assist in service related questions on phone or on site.
- Establish methods to meet work schedules and coordinate work activities when necessary, with other units.
- Resolve work problems and recommend measures to improve productivity and product quality.
- Prepare display Docks for Trade Show displays.
- Make on the spot decisions based on best company interest
- Continuously monitor wood shop workers to ensure productivity and quality and report to VPP with concerns
- Advise on a Saturday schedule that 2 employees can cover all necessary areas and submit to VPP
- Weekly wood/material/hardware inventory taken and reported to VPP
Skills Required:
- Good carpentry skills
- Proven carpentry abilities in an production or construction environment.
- Demonstrated ability to lead/instruct crew members
- Use of materials as cost efficiently as possible
- Ability to keep up with production demands
- Able to work under pressure
- Strong attention to detail
- Fork Lift license an asset
- Logical thinker when new situations arise
- Demonstrated ability to train less knowledgeable technicians.
- Strong problem-solving techniques
- Valid “G” License and be insurable under R&J Machine’s policy
- Ability to work independently in a busy environment
- Ability to work closely with Welding Shop Foreman to increase production and quality
- Able to deal with people sensitivity, tactfully and professionally at all times
- Computer literate, able to fill out reports and correspond with suppliers when necessary
Work Conditions
- Working indoors ( wood shop)/ outdoors ( shop yard)
- Year round employment ( min 44 hours per week)
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs
- Employee may be exposed to dust, and high levels of noise.
- Travel off site may be required
- Personal Safety equipment will be required-steel toed boots, safety glasses,etc...
- Overtime as Required ( work day 7am to 5pm)
- Hazards associated with the trade
- May be exposed to construction sites if onsite modifications required
