Job Summary
Apply your skills for organizational communications and engagement to this specialized and engaging role.
Reporting to the Communications Manager within the Strategic Initiatives Branch, the Communications Officer provides services to facilitate the accurate and timely communication of Ministry information to audiences through a wide variety of media. The position researches, develops, plans, writes/edits and produces a variety of communications materials, intranet and internet updates, presentations and online documentation. The Communications Officer provides graphic design services for Ministry internal communications, as well as web design support for the Ministry intranet while managing daily updates to the site. The position represents the Ministry on cross-government committees and communities of practice related to communications initiatives.
The Strategic and Indigenous Partnerships Division (SIPD) of the Ministry of Energy Mines and Low Carbon Innovation (Ministry) facilitates the responsible development of British Columbia's natural resources, including mining, oil and gas development, electricity and alternative energy. SIPD delivers key initiatives and functions that help fulfill the mandate of the Ministry and advance the priorities of government including reviewing policies, programs and legislation to determine how to bring the principles of the UNDRIP into action in BC and working to move forward on the Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. SIPD provides central leadership and support, primarily in the areas of strategic policy, Indigenous relations, intergovernmental relations, planning and reporting, natural resources, and the legislative and legal affairs related to the Ministry's mandate.
Job Requirements:
  • Diploma or degree in communications, writing or web design.
  • An equivalent combination of education and training (i.e. a certificate of completion of formal course work in communications, public relations, journalism or a related field) combined with related experience, may also be considered.
  • Experience working in the field of communications, including writing/editing a variety of communications materials.
  • Experience working with visual presentation platforms and graphics software (i.e. Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Microsoft PowerPoint, Canva, etc.).
  • Experience with a content management system (e.g. CMS Lite).

Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:
  • Experience in communications in the public sector.
  • Experience in CMS Lite in a professional setting.
  • Minimum 2 years experience working in the field of communications for a large organization, including writing/editing a variety of communications materials.

Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work from home a few days a week subject to an approved telework agreement.
