Introduction
Excess Underwriting is a leading MGA headquartered in Markham Ontario. Consisting of four key divisions, Excess does business coast-to-coast. Reporting to our Assistant Vice-President Commercial Property & Casualty, the Commercial Underwriter will be driving the growth and development of the company's specialized portfolio, being responsible for the full underwriting process end-to-end including; leading the underwriting process for new clientele, leading all aspects of compliance to binding authority framework and management reporting. The role works collaboratively with the broker partners, you will maintain underwriting and service standards.

How you'll make an impact
How Will You Affect the Business?
- Oversee and develop sound underwriting standard & run underwriting process
- Underwrite new business, endorsements and renewals in accordance to guidelines and authority for each insuring partner
- Facilitate the processing of renewals by working with broker partners and the team
- Within your level of authority, quote, negotiate, sell, and authorize the acceptance of new business, renewals, and endorsements to develop and retain profitable business according to the business plan established for the team
- Review risks for acceptability, secure additional information as required and decide on appropriate course of action
- Recommend solution when requiring approval and referring to company underwriters
- Nurture relationships with brokers by phone, email and other forms of communication
- Provide support and suggestions to brokers in conjunction with other teams as required
- Report development and educational opportunities as experienced in day to day broker interaction and by attending tradeshows
- Render approval/decline decisions on incoming applications for new businesses consistent with internal and insurer policies
- Responsible for ensuring all files, forms and client details are updated
About you
Education and Experience
- 3+ years of commercial underwriting experience
- College or University Degree or commensurate experience required
- Insurance Designations an asset (CAIB, CRM etc.) with a strong preference for the CIP
- Positive demeanour, enthusiasm and drive
- Strong written and oral presentation skills
- Competency with the MS Office suite of software
- Strong, established market relationships
- Ability to handle change effectively
- Strong leadership and management skills
