Temporary Full-Time Excluded Position (ASAP until 4 December 2024)

8:30am to 4:30pm / Monday to Friday Grade 8 ($39.56 to $52.75 per hour)

 

 

Emily Carr University of Art + Design is a school of students, faculty, thinkers and makers unlike any other. The Coordinator, Student Rights, Responsibility + Safety provides guidance and case management support on matters related to student complaints, sexual and gender-based violence, misconduct, and threatening behaviour, covering policies 4.7 Student complaints, 4.6 Student Conduct, 3.6, 3.6.1 and 3.6.2 on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence and Misconduct, and policies 6.10 and 6.10.1 on Dealing with Threatening Behaviour. In consultation with counselling/wellness, faculty, staff, and students, the Coordinator Student Rights, Responsibly and Safety ensures comprehensive services and support plans are in place for students in the areas of prevention, education, and support for incidents of misconduct, sexualized violence/misconduct, and other threatening behaviours.

 

The Coordinator provides case management support to the Threat Assessment Team. In collaboration with members of Academic Affairs, Human Resources, Facilities, Counselling Wellness and Accessibility Services, and Student Services, the Coordinator ensures that individuals impacted by incidence of threatening behaviour, violence or reported misconduct receive the care and support needed to access health and academic services, legal options, and reporting processes in a safe environment. The coordinator will ensure appropriate supports are in place when responding to disclosures from marginalized and vulnerable populations including, but not limited to, racialized, trans and non-conforming, LGBTQ2S+, faith based or persons with disabilities. Furthermore, the Coordinator works to support the complainant and respondent to any alleged act of violence or misconduct and ensures all parties are given fair and equitable treatment as described by university policy. The Coordinator provides students access to education and prevention activities, including but not limited to training, awareness campaigns, individual consultation and support. The Coordinator will act to review and investigate reported breaches of student policies, facilitates early resolution and alternate resolution measures, attend relevant committees, and, if required bring evidence to Policy Advisors for decision making and sanctioning.

 

As the successful applicant, you should possess:

 

  • Master’s degree in a relevant discipline, Social Work, Psychology, Criminology or Counselling.
  • Minimum 5 years’ related experience providing support in areas such as survivor services, sexual and gender-based violence prevention and education, risk and threat assessment, preferably in a post-secondary setting, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Violence Risk Assessment and Management for Post-Secondary Institutions training and experience.
  • Excellent knowledge of survivor-centered and trauma-informed professional practice.
  • Experience with alternate dispute resolution practices, conflict resolution, mediation, and restorative justice.
  • Experience with case management and the accurate tracking and reporting of related data.
  • Knowledge of relevant policies and legislation including the University Act, Human Rights Code of British Columbia, Sexual and Gender Based Violence and Misconduct, Student Non-Academic Misconduct, Harassment, Discrimination, Bullying Dealing with Threatening Behaviour, Threat Assessment Team Procedures.
  • Excellent knowledge of education and response for diverse populations and issues including gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, ancestry, race, national and ethnic origin, religion, ability, physical and mental disability, family, marital and socioeconomic status.
  • Experience with prevention program development including the creation of learning outcomes and program/service assessment.
  • Experience working with a multidisciplinary team of health and support service providers, academic departments, and individuals receiving and investigating reports of sexual violence.
  • Investigate, evaluate, and advise on complaints and allegations of violations of Student Rights & Responsibilities, Sexual Violence, harassment, bullying, discrimination, threatening behaviour and other relevant policies.
  • Investigate and facilitate the resolution of student conflict and or other matters pertaining to student complaint processes.
  • Assist with student disciplinary process related to non- academic matters in accordance with Student Conduct Policies
  • Receive and document incident reports and prioritize them according to level of concern, contact all relevant partners and act appropriately to intervene.
  • Prepare letters in matters of student complaint and misconduct violations.
  • Provide recommendations for safety plans and necessary interim measures, including but not limited to no contact agreements and restricted access to campus.
  • Meet with students to ascertain the nature and scope of their concerns and to advise students on how to proceed under relevant policies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing equity, diversity and inclusion in the post-secondary context.
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing processes of Indigenization and decolonization in the post-secondary context.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly, effectively, and tactfully with students on sensitive and complex matters.
  • Ability to coordinate and collaborate on the training and educational workshops on a wide variety of violence prevention, risk, and threat assessment topics.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in crisis situations, using sound professional judgment, maturity, ethical practice and common sense.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, administrators, staff and students as well external service providers.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Personal resilience, flexibility and openness with strongly developed self-care skills.
  • Excellent writing, oral communication, and organizational skills; ability to use tact and diplomacy to handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations effectively.
  • Gather and analyze data, aggregate information, conduct statistical analysis and prepare reports.
  • Ability to stay current with trends and literature regarding sexual and gender-based violence prevention and education, methods of risk and threat assessment.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, as needed, including some evenings and weekends.  

 

Typical Duties include:

 

  • Provides hands on case management, through an intersectional lens, in the following ways: Meets with individuals to record statements and gather other details (i.e. collateral statements, evidence, as appropriate). Conducts interviews, collects relevant information in a professional and compassionate manner, including reviewing information from victims, witnesses, and alleged suspects. Provides information and responds to intake reports or questions and case management of informal / formal complaints, by employees and students. Provides recommendations and makes referrals for individuals for campus services and external community services when necessary. Involves the appropriate security or law enforcement for situations as required.
  • Provides a first point of contact for student inquiries about appeals, complaints and other policy related questions.
  • Works collaboratively as a member of threat assessment team, to complete violence risk assessments to evaluate threatening or potential threatening behaviour/situations involving visitors, students, staff, faculty, or others.
  • Coordinates, and tracks cases and related sensitive information regarding threats or potential threats and develops, presents, and coordinates training for faculty, staff, students, or others in identifying potential risk situations and risk reduction strategies.
  • Provides feedback and input for the development of policies, priorities, procedures, and guidelines consistent with leading practices in violence prevention and harm reduction and aligned to relevant legislation and the University’s strategic plan.
  • Works with Executive Director Student Engagement Retention + Success to develop, plan and deliver relevant presentations that promote health and safety and provide student with necessary information on how to access services and support.
  • Provide outreach to the campus community regarding Student Rights, responsibilities, and safety.
  • Creates and conducts student workshop sessions regarding Student Rights, responsibilities on topic related to non-academic student conduct, consent, conflict resolution, de-escalation, and safety plans.
  • Works with Executive Director Student Engagement Retention + Success to develop appropriate peer education and support models for Student Rights responsibilities and safety programming.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with community partners such as police, legal services and community-based victim/survivor support services.
  • Acts as a resource and represents the University internally and externally on committees related to sexual and gender-based violence and misconduct, and violence risk and threat assessment. 
  • In collaboration with the Student Services, and Counselling, Wellness and Accessibility Services, ensures optimal coordination of services for students and those who identify as a victim or survivor of sexual violence.
  • Creates a safe, trauma-informed and survivor-centered environment for disclosure and reporting of sexual and gender-based violence and misconduct, and other forms of threatening behaviour.
  • Provides support and options concerning legal, academic, health and reporting resources for survivors/victims. Works to ensure that services are maximally accessible to survivors/victims.
  • Maintains current knowledge of best practices and developments in the prevention and education of sexual and gender-based violence and victim/survivor support, and risk and threat assessment.
  • Maintains statistics for the purposes of ongoing analysis, reporting and assessment of services provided, including annual reporting to the Board of Governors and the President’s Executive Committee. 
  • Maintains the privacy of all information in accordance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
  • Contribute to a culture of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) by demonstrating respect and cultural sensitivity, and an awareness of JEDI principles, and how they impact the field of work. May make recommendations to the Interim Executive Director, Student Engagement Retention + Success for improvements in support of ECU’s JEDI goals.
