Position Description

Libraries and Cultural Resources at the University of Calgary invites applications for a two-year limited term Digital Projects Librarian, Digital Scholarship at the rank of Assistant Librarian. This is a two-year limited term appointment, with an expected start date of April 1, 2024.

Nature of the Work:
Libraries and Cultural Resources (LCR) is a leader in the development of innovative information resources and services, locally, nationally and internationally. In a converged environment, it successfully incorporates the resources and services of libraries, institutional and research archives, rare books and special collections, art galleries, and a university press to provide outstanding support for scholarship, learning, and the creation of knowledge.

This is an incredibly exciting time as LCR invests in its technological infrastructure and seeks new and innovative ways to actualize the digital in the Taylor Family Digital Library. LCR supports many parts of the research life cycle through Lab NEXT, a constellation of services that facilitates digital research initiatives and experiential learning. LCR’s services and spaces support students and scholars in emerging areas including research data management, scholarly publishing, data visualization, and extended reality. We work with partners across campus to advance the principles of the Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) and our digital repositories support new forms of scholarly communication.

Reporting to the Acting Associate University Librarian, Research Support, the Digital Projects Librarian has a focus on scholarly communications and Digital Scholarship. The successful candidate will provide reference and research services in these areas.

As an academic staff position, appropriate participation and involvement in teaching, service and scholarship is expected.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Provide reference, consultation, outreach, and instruction to support scholarly communications services
  • Develop and maintain current knowledge of and trends in scholarly publishing, Open Access, repositories, research assessment, Digital Scholarship, and related areas
  • As part of a collaborative team, support researcher use of UCalgary’s digital repositories, including PRISM and PRISM Data, as well as Open Journal Systems
  • With support from colleagues, develop and maintain competencies in supporting students and researchers in using technologies including 3D printers, XR technologies, and other tools for Digital Scholarship and experiential learning
  • Apply knowledge to continuously improve and advance skills
  • Support sustainable digital project and collection development

Qualifications/Expertise Required:

  • Masters from an American Library Association accredited program in librarianship, or recognized equivalent
  • Demonstrated understanding of scholarly communication trends and the role of academic libraries in in the scholarly communication ecosystem
  • Thorough understanding and awareness of open access, repositories and research data management, data services, and digital library development
  • Demonstrated understanding of Digital Scholarship trends and academic library requirements and priorities, including familiarity with Digital Scholarship environments and labs
  • Interest in implementing new initiatives and in evaluation of current practice
  • Established record of successful project management
  • Interest in implementing new initiatives and in evaluation of current practice
  • Interest and curiosity about emerging technologies and their application to research and learning
  • Strong service orientation
  • Ability to operate within a complex work environment, working both independently and within a team setting
  • Proven ability to successfully manage multiple competing priorities with minimal supervision and direction
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills

Salary and Benefits:
Position will be commensurate with qualifications and experience at the rank of Assistant Librarian.
