Job description

Miller’s at Maritime Inn Port Hawkesbury (MIPH) - Dining Room Manager

The Basics:

We’re rated on TripAdvisor as the #1 restaurant in Port Hawkesbury and recently made the list of the Top 25 Restaurants on Cape Breton, but we have no intention of stopping there. What can we say? We’ve got high standards! Our aim is to provide a dining experience that is high-quality, professional yet comfortable, and memorable for each and every guest that visits us, each and every time they come.

As Dining Room Manager, you are responsible for the smooth operation of the Front of House at Miller’s, and for ensuring positive relations between front and back of house staff. You oversee the pubic facing side of both the restaurant and catering operations, and it’s your responsibility to ensure outstanding guest satisfaction with each and every visit. You oversee the Miller’s social media presence and respond quickly to any inquiries. Additionally responsible for managing F&B profitability, inventory, waste control, recruitment, training, scheduling, and performance evaluation in the Dining Room. You work closely with the Head Chef to ensure ongoing improvement and success at Miller’s. Note: this is a working position, where the Dining Room Lead spends 4-5 shifts per week working in service during peak business hours.

What WE expect:

No matter what position you hold at MIPH, there are a few things that are critical to success: creating a safe workplace, following company policies and procedures, upholding quality standards, and ensuring your uniform, personal appearance, and communications are professional.

… But specific to the Dining Room Manager position, we rely on you to:

Train and develop your team: Ensure new team members receive sufficient training and orientation, and continue to encourage and facilitate skill development in established team members. Provide direction as needed for all team members, and ensure everyone is working to standard. Keep your team informed by leading meetings to discuss issues, organizational changes, or new menu updates on a regular basis.
Strive for improvement: From collecting guest feedback to analyzing reports, you’re always looking for ways to improve all aspects of the restaurant operation.
Set the tone: As the leader in the Dining Room, and it’s your responsibility to promote an inclusive, enjoyable, productive work environment. You lead by example, whether it’s arriving on time, a high standard of food presentation, or maintaining composure in high stress situations.
Keep an eye on the numbers: As part of managing this successful restaurant, you’ll develop budgets for and keep a close watch on labour hours, cost of goods sold, and inventories. If something’s not meeting targets, you’ll work quickly to find solutions and get things back in line.
Manage your time: This is a demanding job, so it’s critical that you’re very comfortable planning and prioritizing to meet those demands, and delegating work as is appropriate.

You’d likely describe yourself as:

A team player A people person A multitasker Hospitality-oriented

A capable communicator A problem solver Even-keel Approachable

The ideal candidate would have 2+ years service leadership experience, knowledge of relevant legislation & regulations to ensure food safety regs are followed, and knowledge of POS systems (Silverware) and reporting.

What YOU can expect:

  • Compensation above the industry average, plus opportunity for substantial gratuities
  • Discounted meal and hotel rates
  • Free use of on-site fitness centre & swimming pool
  • Single or family health benefits
  • Varied work hours, including weekends and holidays
