Purpose of the position:
The Pharmacy Assistant welcomes the patients to the pharmacy and becomes the first line of contact to administer patients' needs. They perform certain tasks assigned to them by the pharmacy technician or pharmacist but always do so under their direct supervision. Ensuring that patients' medications are processed correctly and on time will help contribute to a positive customer experience. Attention to detail is a fundamental ability to be a Pharmacy Assistant; it is also imperative that the Pharmacy Assistant demonstrates effective communication and prioritizes workflow to exceed expectations.
Responsibilities:
- Respond to patient inquiries over the phone or in person professionally and on time.
- Accept new written prescriptions or request prescription refills from patients or their agents.
- Assist the pharmacist and or technician in filling blister packs when required.
- Administer prompt computer functions such as data entry, price checks, and patient information updates.
- Receive and input prescription orders into the system and access the drug for completion.
- Create non-sterile compound solutions, ointments and creams as per the pharmacists' instructions.
- Check for expired medications and share information with the pharmacist.
- Liaise with healthcare providers to ensure the accuracy of prescription information and claim submissions.
- Communicate with patients and health providers, ensuring third-party insurance claims are processed correctly.
- Performs quality drug dispensing and verifies all DINs, ensuring medication matches labels.
- Handle sales transactions for medications and other pharmaceutical supplies.
- Refer all recommendations, over-the-counter drug questions and prescription signoffs to the pharmacist.
- Monitor stock and replenish supplies, providing sufficient quantities for optimal operation.
- Adhere to the safety and cleanliness of the pharmacy area and equipment by being proactive.
- Demonstrate empathy, understanding, and sound judgments when resolving customer or patient problems while working independently to meet daily goals.
- Accurately and efficiently package medications according to prescription orders, ensuring adherence to safety and quality standards.
- Prepare delivery orders by assembling and organizing medication packages, verifying contents, and labelling packages with appropriate patient information.
- Collaborate with pharmacy staff to ensure seamless communication and coordination of packaging and delivery activities.
- High school graduate or college program graduate preferred
- One year experience as a Pharmacy Assistant
- Minimum one year experience with Data Entry (i.e. prescription entry), specifically on Kroll
- Experience with Kroll Paperless Workflow, an asset
- Experience with Kroll batching cycles is an asset
- Excellent customer service skills and ability to engage with the public
- Demonstrates effective communication, both oral and written
- Strong abilities in handling various tasks at the same time
- Knowledge of medication and pharmaceutical products
- Knowledge of drug regulations
- Knowledge of generic and trade names of commonly prescribed medications
- Strong attention to detailing
- Excellent phone manner, speaks clearly and professionally
