Description

The Operations Engineer is a professional member of the Offgas Operations team, applying a broad base of engineering skills and experience to support the continued safe, compliant, and reliable operation of the Pioneer 1 and 2 Offgas Plants. The Operations Engineer will work directly with the Plants’ operations, maintenance, and engineering teams in this regard. Primary responsibilities include troubleshooting O&M issues, managing the implementation of solutions at the field level, liaising between the Plants and off-site departments, and growing the Plants’ reliability program. This role requires an individual who is inquisitive, self-driven, and resourceful.


The Operations Engineer is based out of the Pioneer 1 Plant, located approximately 25 minutes north of Fort McMurray, and reports to the Manager, Offgas Engineering. Weekly travel to the Pioneer 2 Plant, located approximately 60 minutes north of Fort McMurray, is required. This role is expected to live locally in the Fort McMurray area.

Key Activities and Responsibilities

  • Learn the various plant processes and monitor plant operations
  • Identify plant improvements in terms of safety, compliance, reliability, and optimization
  • Lead and/or support growth of the Plants’ asset management and reliability programs, including but not limited to spare parts assessment, equipment performance assessment, vibration analysis, development of maintenance practices and plans, analytics and dashboard development, etc.
  • Lead and report on root cause investigations pertaining to operational and/or equipment incidents
  • Lead and report on troubleshooting, problem solving activities pertaining to facility process and/or equipment issues
  • Interface with external engineering firms, vendors/manufacturers, and contractors
  • Liaise between plant personnel and off-site based Engineering, Integrity, Safety, Environmental, Regulatory, Land, etc. departments
  • Perform on-site inspection of maintenance and construction activities
  • Provide on-site engineering support to plant outage activities
  • Manage the execution of multiple assigned Projects, MOCs, and tasks at the same time
  • Prepare engineering/construction work packages in area(s) of technical competency
  • Support long-term O&M and capital planning and budget development by preparing scopes and estimates, maintaining project forecasts, and identifying potential future projects

Education, Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering. A Mechanical Engineering degree is preferred, but other degrees will be considered if requisite experience exists
  • Registration with, or eligible for registration with, APEGA as a Professional Engineer
  • Class 5 Drivers license
  • Minimum of 5-8 years of industry related experience, with a proven track record in plant operations, maintenance and reliability
  • Technical understanding of natural gas liquids (NGL) extraction, cryogenic processes and NGL storage processes and equipment (or other industrial process facilities)
  • Experience with process facility static and rotating equipment operation and maintenance activities
  • Knowledge of process engineering and safety concepts
  • Knowledge of multi-discipline engineering systems in a facility setting (civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, controls)
  • Knowledge and application of reliability engineering principles
  • Lead investigations, troubleshooting, and problem solving initiatives
  • Working knowledge and application of industry codes, standards, and best practices
  • Project management
  • Innovative and collaborative, with strong organization, communication and interpersonal skills

Hours

Full time position, Monday-Friday
This position may be eligible for an Alternate Work Arrangement (4 x 10 hrs per day)
