The Opportunity: Engineering Manager - Web Engineering

Ground News is looking for an Engineering Manager who will play a hands-on leadership role in driving our mission to build an outstanding technology company. You will have unique knowledge and abilities to contribute to our web products and mobile applications. You must be a strong leader who can guide our team beyond our already high standards of engineering to the next level.

The right candidate is both extremely hands on – technically excellent, with solid engineering principles – and exhibits strong leadership and people development skills.

What you’ll Do:

As a Manager of web engineering, you will focus on frontend development, and you will lead initiatives to optimize the development environment and workflows for the frontend team while dedicating 50-60% of your time being an individual contributor.

• Optimize for Scale: Maintain a strong focus on best practices to ensure performance at scale as our products evolve and our user base grows.
• Cross-Department Collaboration: Work closely with team members from various departments, effectively communicating technical aspects to non-technical stakeholders and translating their needs into implementable solutions.
• Rapid Ownership and Delivery: Quickly take ownership of customer-facing features and products, with an expectation to roll out new developments within weeks of joining.
• End-to-End Project Involvement: Engage in projects from conception and design to implementation and delivery, collaborating with stakeholders to refine solutions.
• Flexible Development Approach: Operate in an environment that values lean and agile methodologies, though not strictly adhering to any one framework.

What you’ll Have:

• Leadership: Dedicated to the craft of engineering management, with proven experience successfully managing engineering teams to deliver great outcomes. Energized to be a mentor and coach to those around you through giving & receiving feedback, with proven results in elevating the teams you’ve managed.
• Technical expertise: At least 7 years of experience in individual contributor engineering building production web applications, with a preference for candidates familiar with lean and agile work environments.
  • Front-end Expertise: Proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript: React.js, Next.js. Vue.js, Redux, Context.
  • Architecture and Deployment: Experience with AWS (CloudFront, Lambda), and serverless infrastructure
  • Backend Familiarity: Experience with MySQL, Express and Node.js.
  • API Design: Proficiency in designing and documenting RESTful APIs, and developing APIs for web and mobile platforms.
• User-focused: You try to always take the end user’s perspective, and see work in the context of who it’s intended for.
• Curious, creative and collaborative: You approach problems incrementally and collaboratively, taking a pragmatic approach without premature optimization or abstraction.
• Soft skills: Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and vice versa.

What you might Have:

• Additional experience in Sequelize, Elasticsearch, Stripe, Paypal integration highly valued
