Job description

Would you like to make a difference in the Environment? Can you see yourself managing Environmental Monitoring information in CNL’s laboratory information management systems (Labworks) to support to the Environmental Monitoring programs? If you answered yes, then this may be the job for you! Our Chalk River location is looking for an Environmental Monitoring Operations Specialist to provide specialist services, information, and evaluations that support the integrated Environmental Monitoring of CNL sites.


What will you be doing!

  • Supporting Super User Administration of EMB’s(Environmental Monitoring Branch) laboratory information management system (LabWorks).
  • Optimizing data input and reporting of environmental data in Labworks and applications that interface with Labworks.
  • Working with EMB and IT staff, as well as vendor(s), to troubleshoot Labworks issues.
  • Performing routine Labworks data review and administration.
  • Overseeing and helping in the development and updating of EMB documentation.
  • Leading the update and review of EMB procedures, lab protocol, radiological work procedures, training qualification cards and scopes of work.
  • Interfacing with Project Control Co-ordinators, and Quality Program and EMB staff to generate the required paperwork for the purchase of capital cost items.
  • Providing support to help the successful execution of EMB operations.
  • Leading or assisting in troubleshooting issues that arise in EMB to reduce operational work down time.
  • Providing oversight on EMB related projects such weir replacements and site characterizations. This can include attending and or co-ordinating project meetings and field walk downs.
  • Helping lead process improvements to optimize EMB operations.
  • Ensuring work is completed accurately following all QA and QC requirements and within time and budgetary limits.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

  • Someone who has the ability to:
    • Be technologically savvy and proficient in learning new software applications.
    • Demonstrate computer skills applicable to database management, instrument automation and spreadsheet applications.
    • Excellent communications (both written and verbal) and presentation skills.
    • Interact effectively with managers and staff of facilities, laboratories, and support groups, and to work as a part of a team.
    • Maintain excellent working relationships with all other members of the branch and internal customers as well as other key stakeholders, vendors, contractors and suppliers.
    • Familiarity with project management software is desirable.
    • Demonstrate good organizational and project management skills.
    • Knowledge and experience with Microsoft office software including Access, Excel and Word.
  • Experience:
    • Work experience with laboratory information systems or equivalent requiring the entry, processing and presentation of vast amounts of data.
    • Work experience with procedures update and development.
    • Work experience in a nuclear facility would be desirable.
    • Knowledge of Laboratory Information Management Systems.
    • Knowledge of laboratory Quality Assurance and Quality Control.
    • Knowledge of environmental aqueous, biota and soil sampling techniques.
  • Education:
    • Bachelor Degree in Information Systems, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Environmental Sciences or related field from a university of recognized standing or membership in scientific professional organization authorized by statute to establish qualification for membership in that organization.
  • Security clearance eligibility required: Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom.

Working Conditions:

  • The office working environment is offered in a cubicle and or shared space setting.
  • Some field walk downs will be required, which could involve walking long distance in a forested environment and being outside for an extended period of time with possible exposure to various “menacing” wildlife, including black flies, mosquitos and bears.
  • Office work environment 90% Field work required 10%

Location:

Hybrid Remote Eligible

CNL works with employees across our Canadian locations to enable remote work when possible. This role requires regular work at CNL’s Chalk River Laboratory site while also permitting the employee to spend the majority of their time working remotely, should they so desire. CNL employees who choose to work remotely the majority of the time are provided with the equipment required to be successful at their remote workplace (laptop, chair, monitor, etc.); however, they are not provided a dedicated onsite office. CNL’s Chalk River laboratory is nestled in the Ottawa Valley and affords our employees an area that is environmentally pristine with extensive forests, hills and numerous small lakes, all of which support a variety of wildlife typical to the southern edge of the Canadian Shield.
