Your Opportunity:
Reporting directly to the Vice-President & Principal, UTSC the incumbent will oversee the creation of public relations, marketing and communications plans and strategies for internal and external audiences that will advance the University of Toronto Scarborough’s strategic priorities. Serving as a member of UTSC’s senior leadership team, the Executive Director, Marketing & Communications provides strategic advice to the Vice-President & Principal on broad range of issues to support the realization of UTSC’s strategic priorities.
The Executive Director, Marketing & Communications is also a member of the University of Toronto Communications (UTC) senior executive team. Reporting to the Vice-President, Communications, the Executive Director, Marketing & Communications works with the UTC executive team to set the annual direction of the portfolio anchored by UTC’s strategic mandate and the University’s key strategic priorities.
As a leader and a mentor, the Executive Director, Marketing & Communications will manage a team of high-caliber professionals and assume overall responsibility for human resources, labour relations, and financial management of the department. The Executive Director, Marketing & Communications will be the campus’ leader and strategic advisor on proactive communications as well as the key communications advisor on dealing with issues and crises affecting the campus.
Working with the Vice-President & Principal, UTSC, the campus’ senior leadership team and the Vice-President, UTC, the Executive Director, Marketing & Communications will provide guidance and advice to ensure a strong profile for UTSC. The Executive Director, Marketing & Communications will work closely with colleagues across the University to ensure the integration of communications efforts across all three campuses and participate and/or lead University wide communication and marketing initiatives. Both on and off campus, the Executive Director, Marketing & Communications will be a strong advocate for a clearly articulated ‘one university, three campuses’ narrative. Consistent with that, the Executive Director, Marketing & Communications will play a leadership role and be a key collaborator on communications initiatives that serve the interests of the entire University.
The Executive Director, Marketing & Communications will oversee the development of comprehensive communications strategies that utilize, as appropriate, the full range of communications tools and channels: earned, social, owned and paid. In developing communications across all channels, the Executive Director, Marketing & Communications will ensure the continuous development of high-quality content that tells the UTSC and U of T stories in ways that are compelling and engaging for our audiences. The Executive Director, Marketing & Communications will be responsible for the development of benchmarks and forms of measurement to continually evaluate and improve upon communications strategies.
The Executive Director, Marketing & Communications will consult widely to develop strategies and provide guidance and advice to the campus community to effectively reach both internal and external audiences. 
Finally, the Executive Director, Marketing & Communications will develop strong working relationships with internal clients and ensure requests for communications support are dealt with in a collaborative, collegial way that ensures key projects are effectively supported with strong communications counsel and high-quality implementation. As such, the Executive Director, Marketing & Communications will be a strong negotiator to ensure departmental resources are effectively used and balanced between individual projects and the need for central communications that support the overall brand of UTSC within a well-defined tri-campus narrative.
Qualifications:
Education: Graduate university degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience: Must have a minimum of ten (10) years’ experience in communications management, with extensive experience in successfully managing complex and highly charged issues on behalf of a publicly visible organization. Demonstrated skills and experience in managing and leading staff in a unionized environment. Extensive experience in advising executive leaders on issues management. Strong record of building positive relations with the media. Experience in brand strategy and leading marketing initiatives. Strong background in project management. Experience working in a complex university environment or equivalent.
Skills:  Outstanding writing and editing skills and verbal communication and presentation skills. Strong consultative leadership style and interpersonal skills, with a focus on collegiality and respect. Ability to deal professionally with tension and potential conflict to lead teams collaboratively through challenging issues or projects. Outstanding communications judgment. Ability to make well considered decisions on behalf of UTSC and its leaders. A strong creative and strategic thinker. High level of professional and detail oriented to ensure the accurate and reliable implementation of communications strategies. Proficiency in computer applications including PowerPoint, Excel, and Word.

Strong managerial experience demonstrating an aptitude for inspiring and mentoring staff and success in that endeavor. Self-starter, responsive and flexibility to work in a consensus-driven environment.
