Under the supervision of a Gardener 3 or designate, the Gardener 1 will perform skilled work in the care of perennials, bedding plants, shrubs and landscaped areas. Maintenance tasks include weeding, watering, cultivating, staking, pruning, preparing planting beds with hand tools and power tools, integrating soil amendments, planting flower beds, planters, planning, etc. In the course of carrying out daily tasks, the Gardener 1 practices established safety procedures in the execution of assigned duties and ensures public safety.
As theGardener 1you will:
- Perform responsible and skilled work in the care of perennials, bedding plants, shrubs, landscaped areas, etc., including weeding, watering, cultivating, staking, pruning, preparing planting beds with hand tools and power tools, arranges and plants the layout of flowerbeds and planters, etc.
- Maintain a variety of records, i.e. designing of floral arrangements and calculating the amount of plant material required for sites designated to that gardener, keeps seasonal records of plant material, seasonal landscaping materials requirements.
- Diagnose for pests and diseases.
- Operate a variety of vehicles/equipment including hand tools and power tools consistent with the classification.
- Operate vehicles and equipment required for gardening maintenance operations including pickup trucks, utility vehicles such as gators, water pumps, etc.
- Follow established safe work practices, operating policies and procedures and ensures compliance.
- Perform other related duties consistent with the classification as required.
Your education and qualifications include:
- Senior 4 (Grade 12) education, GED or equivalent.
- Horticulture post-secondary education, training and/or courses in is preferred.
- General knowledge of conventional horticultural practices and commonly used landscape plants and shrubs.
- Successful completion of or willing to obtain:
- First Aid Certificate
- WHMIS/GHS
- Temporary Traffic Control
- Effective written communication with the ability to complete accurate records.
- Effective verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, external contacts and the general public.
- Demonstrated ability in the safe operation and maintenance of equipment, hand tools and power tools consistent with the classification.
- Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precaution policies and regulations and the ability to adhere to and enforce safety rules and policies.

Conditions of employment:
- The successful applicant must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful applicant possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s License.
- Successful candidates will be required to provide a valid Driver’s Notice in Force letter.
- The successful applicant(s) will be required to provide personal protective safety boots at their own expense.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods and over uneven terrain.
- Must be physically capable of performing duties of the position. (e.g. capable of lifting and moving objects up to 30 lbs. (flower flats, tillers, on/off trucks, wheelbarrows).
- Must be able to work evenings, weekends and overtime as required.
