Work Schedule: 14 on and 7 off / 10 hours per day
Reporting to: VP, Construction & Maintenance
Wage Range: $70.00-$85.00 per hour

Job Purpose

The General Superintendent will be responsible for leading the execution of safe & efficient work for a variety of projects and maintenance activities at their assigned project site.

Responsibilities:
  • Display a commitment to Waiward’s incident-free vision, values, and culture;
  • Provide leadership that results in a safe work culture. Responsible and accountable for the safety of the crews under their direction and leadership.
  • Comprenhend Waiward's HSE Manual and requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Know and understand the clients EH&S regulations and policies.
  • Oversee and help identify the crews needs for safety equipment.
  • Participate in and monitor toolbox talks, weekly safety meetings, and when requested by Superintendent, chair meetings.
  • Champion the utilization and adherence of Waiward HSE Program(s) including Nobody Gets Hurt and Pause & Assess through ongoing positive encouragement as well as active participation.
  • Oversee all aspects of field execution, ensuring work crews are efficiently organizing crews and consistently applying Waiward’s and client policies and procedures.
  • Instruct, inform, and support both Safety and Quality on all aspects of the project.
  • Involved in day-to-day disciplinary decisions and those additional discipline actions deemed appropriate.
  • Oversee the ongoing application of Waiward’s Competency Program; supports their direct report’s with their assessment of competency and capability of foreman and tradespersons; evaluating crew capability, training, coaching to ensure that the crew meets required levels of quality.
  • Recognize, address and resolve issues and problems among/between crew(s).
  • Set and maintain work standards and outlining behavioral expectations to ensure crew moral and productivity.
  • Work with Site Superintendent(s) to ensure equipment and vehicle maintenance and vehicle logs are up to date and maintained.
  • Support the development as well as ensure project plans and schedules are followed to ensure that all field crews perform daily and weekly activities to meet production goals.
  • Identify needs and deficiencies in the look ahead plan/schedule and communicate these to the appropriate persons.
  • Translate general work requirements into a prioritized work plan for each crew.
  • Review and adjust specific workface activities and tasks scheduled to meet established production schedules.
  • Champion a labour relations culture and adhere to labour relations policies and procedures by the crews under your direction. Support and provide information and leadership to the craft supervision as it relates to them meeting their labour relations responsibilities;
  • Know and understand collective and/or PLA agreements for your site/s.
  • Promote, support and facilitate teamwork by promoting and fostering a positive, viable teamwork attitude among all Waiward support staff.
  • Ensure the work done meets standards and codes and that the implementation of work processes improves productivity and product quality.
  • Prepare reports and review craft supervision reports as required by Waiward.
  • Oversee and ensure the time sheet process is understood and executed by all craft supervision in a timely manner; reviewing accuracy/completeness and providing coaching and mentoring as necessary.
  • Review and understand the governing site contract and how it applies to Waiward’s responsibilities pertaining to field execution.
  • Oversee and/or review and approve field work estimates; ensuring all required labor, equipment and materials are accounted for.
  • Oversee the execution of all subcontractor work, ensuring the align/adhere to both Waiward and client policies and procedures.
  • Responsible to fully acclimate and utilize Waiward’s corporate Information Management System (IMS) as well as applicable network drives required to execute field work.
  • Lead the development and management of execution plans, project schedule(s) and contractual agreements.
  • Work collaboratively with site Senior Project Manager and (when applicable) trade specific Superintendents to determine efficient use of resources, materials and labor necessary to execute various field work in a timely manner;
  • Interact with employees, client representatives, subcontractors, unions and/or consultants as a “primary point of contact” for execution work; responsible for facilitating resolution of issues, concerns as and disputes as required.
  • Promote positive community integration and actively participate in community sponsors initiatives related to field work (trade fairs, local recruitment etc).
  • May perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Journeyperson Trade Ticket
  • Minimum 15+ years’ experience and proven track record in construction operations management within the industrial maintenance and construction industry.
  • 15+ years’ experience in multi-disciplinary industrial construction or plant maintenance environment.
  • Knowledge of OH&S Legislation, WCB, Collective Agreements.
  • Must have CSTS-2020
  • Valid certifications for the work being performed (i.e. - Fall Protection, Confined Space Entry & Monitor, EWP, etc.)
  • Must complete a pre-access Alcohol and Drug test prior to accessing site.
  • Class 5 Driver's Licence and a clear and current driver's abstract are required.
  • Strong computer background including experience with MS office and Bluebeam.
  • Strong communication skills, confident interacting with key contracts in verbal, written and electronic form.
  • Ability to lead personnel in a productive, safe and quality manner.
  • Problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to organize and delegate work.
Working Conditions

The incumbent is required to work on a maintenance/construction site with moderate noise, extreme temperatures, inclement weather and other safety sensitive conditions associated with industrial site/plant work.

Physical Requirements

The incumbent is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: viewing assembly specifications for extended periods of time; and extensive reading. The incumbent is also required to stand and sit for extended periods of time and will require good physical attributes for walking on uneven ground, climbing, confined space entry, limited lifting, and sitting.
