Purpose
Reporting to the Programs Coordinator, the KidsCamp Leads primary duty is to assist with coordinating, researching, developing and delivering eight weeks of KidsCamp activities and programs. This position will assist with the supervision of camp operations and communicate with parents. The student also has a role to play in helping with special events and additional programming for both children and adults, as required.

Responsibilities
Lead Duties


  • Provide exceptional programming for children aged 5 to 10 through eight weeks of KidsCamp
  • Plan and maintain an environment that protects the health, security and well-being of children
  • Research, develop and deliver daily lesson/activity plans for eight weeks of KidsCamp programming
  • Assist with the supervision of daily camp operations, such as program schedules, assigning camp staff to roles (as needed), ensuring programming materials are organized and ready, greeting volunteers and supporting them through the day
  • Assess the abilities, interests and needs of children and discuss progress or problems with parents and other staff members
  • Communicate with Programs Coordinator regarding camper and camp concerns in a timely, professional manner
  • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with co-workers and community service providers working with children
  • Assist the Programs Coordinator in training of students and volunteers to help with KidsCamp
  • Supervise participants and other KidsCamp staff or volunteers when the Programs Coordinator is unavailable. Communicate any issues immediately to the Programs Coordinator.
  • Support the Programs Coordinator in preparing for special programming (PA Days, events, etc.)
  • Prepare a report on activities, including recommendations, at the end of the season.
  • Assists in the production of promotional materials to attract participants and volunteers.
  • Assists in maintaining medical, emergency, safety and permission documents as well as other administrative details
  • Maintains open and effective communication with parents of participating children and Junior Interpreters (youth volunteers).
  • Be a positive leader and professional example for fellow students and volunteers in work ethic and communication
  • Be flexible and open to learning new skills to better connect and engage with camp participants

Other Duties

  • Assists in all activities, special on-site events, adult and childrens programming, both on and off site.
  • Maintains skills at a high level. Participates in training and development opportunities as suggested and arranged by the Engagement and Education Manager.
  • May be required to write about topics relating to Grey Roots for newsletters, newspapers or the web as required.
  • Responsible as an employee for Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Participates in other related Grey Roots activities assigned by the Engagement and Education Manager.


Working Conditions

Normal hours of work are 35 hours per week. Flexibility and willingness to work irregular hours on evenings or weekends will be required as determined by the operational hours of Grey Roots. Compensation for the same will be in accordance with County policies.

Work is often performed in public spaces both indoors and outdoors and involves a high degree of contact with children and the general public.

Knowledge and Skill


  • A student, returning school in the upcoming academic year working towards a post-secondary diploma/degree in museum studies, education, or related field.
  • Good organizational, time management, verbal and written communication skills, ability to prioritize, problem solve, and handle multiple duties and interruptions effectively.
  • Extensive childrens camp, school or daycare experience planning and facilitating
  • Excellent communication skills with various groups (children, adults, organizations)
  • Experience with children of different abilities and circumstances
  • Knowledge of Moreston Heritage Village and Grey Roots program activities
  • Excellent public speaking skills, creativity and research skills; ability to engage with visitors of all ages.
  • Friendly, outgoing, courteous personality; basic knowledge of Grey County history an asset.
  • Previous customer service experience and training is an asset.
  • Knowledge of Ontario education curriculum is an asset.

Impact of Error
Errors within the capacity of the summer student role could negatively impact the perception and confidence in Grey Roots Museum & Archives, its stakeholders and assets.
