Job Description
The Health & Safety Coordinator will work with City departments and employee groups to foster a culture of safety and support supervisory and managerial staff on coordination and implementation of a robust Health & Safety program. Under the direction of the management team the Health & Safety Coordinator will analyze operating procedures, materials, equipment conditions at work sites to determine risks of injuries and occupational disease. Responsibilities include assisting management to develop and implement measures for controlling workplace hazards and limiting loss and liability for City.
In partnership with the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee (JOHSC), incumbents are responsible for monitoring compliance with OH&S Regulations, legislation and Standards, City Policies, Programs and Procedures related to OH&S.
This position is required to anticipate, recognize, evaluate and assist in the development of practical controls for safety hazards and compliance.
Deliverables include:
- providing advice and recommendations on Regulatory compliance to managers;
- Assist in investigating safety concerns or incidents and providing reports and recommendations to managers;
- Coordinating Health & Safety projects
- Delivering educational programs and materials as required
- Conducting ergonomic assessments and related recommendations –
- Guiding and assisting with the operation of Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee.
Qualifications
- Degree, Diploma or Certificate (combined with experience) in Occupational Health and/or Safety or, an acceptable combination of education, training and experience.
- Professional Designation (or working towards): CRSP, ROH or CIH is an asset.
- Experience working in the public sector operations or a unionized environment is an asset.
The successful candidate will require a valid BC (Class 5) driver's license. For new hires and those working in designated positions of trust, including those working directly with vulnerable persons, employment is conditional on a satisfactory police information check.

This position is within the union bargaining unit and the rate of pay is $33.32 per hour, (2024 rates) with a full benefit package upon completion of probation.
