Job description

Position Summary:

The Museum Supervisor oversees the daily operation of the Knaut-Rhuland House Museum and also interprets a living history experience with museum visitors through guided tours, including the history of the Knaut-Rhuland House Museum, the families who once occupied the home, and the Town of Lunenburg.

Salary: $17.00 per hour, Full-time, Temporary

Responsibilities include:

  • Supervise two Museum Interpreters
  • Maintain work schedules,
  • Log and report staff hours and visitor statistics,
  • Manage email, social media and telephone enquiries,
  • Conduct tours of the museum, including interpreting a living history experience through the history of the Knaut-Rhuland House Museum, and the families who once occupied the home, and of the Town of Lunenburg
  • Assist with programs and events.
  • Maintain exhibits and the heritage garden,
  • Conduct sales in the onsite Lunenburg Heritage Society gift shop and local merchant wholesale order,
  • Demonstrate heritage skills and crafts,
  • Promote the museum through social media,
  • Assist with initial training of two Museum Interpreters, as well as ongoing questions and training needs,
  • Open and close the museum,
  • Commit to a safe work environment for staff, volunteers, and visitors.

Qualifications:

  • Successful candidates must meet funding criteria such as residency, and may include age and school enrolment (details posted when available),
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills,
  • Interest in museum studies, history, education, heritage studies or an arts or culture related degree with an interest in arts administration,
  • Ability to work independently, without constant supervision, and be self-motivated,
  • Ability to work as an effective team member,
  • Ability to work and interact with the public and supervising staff,
  • Fluent in English. Knowledge of French or German considered an asset.

The Knaut-Rhuland House Museum is a seasonal museum located at 125 Pelham Street, Lunenburg and is open 7 days per week. This is a 14-week position with a 35-hour week consisting of 5 shifts. Weekend shifts will be required. The Museum Supervisor reports to the Museum Administrator and Directors of the Lunenburg Heritage Society. We are an equal opportunity employer. Position is made possible due to Federal and/or Provincial Funding and applications may also be accepted through the funding agency.
