Hospital Elder Life Program Volunteer
Purpose: The Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP) at St. Joseph’s Continuing Carew Centre in Sudbury is a patient care program that helps prevent delirium and functional decline in older hospitalized patients. With a trained team of volunteers, HELP address a wide range of geriatric issues during a patients hospitalization to help them during their rehabilitation journey.
Requirements of the Role: Under the direction of the HELP Coordinator, the volunteer will:
- Complete SJCCC Volunteer Orientation
- Complete HELP classroom, workbook, and on unit training
- Complete HELP with patients on program
- Document about HELP visit
- Update HELP coordinator regarding patients progress in the program
- Notify HELP coordinator in advance to notify of lateness or absence.
- Support other HELP volunteers
- Adhere to the volunteer position description
- Adhere to all policies and procedures
- Adhere to all health and safety requirements
- Respect the confidentiality appropriate to all issues
Tasks/Activities and Responsibilities
- Building positive relationships with both the patients, staff, and volunteers
- Improving knowledge, skills, and experience
- Establishing rapport with HELP patients
- Facilitating interventions with HELP patients
- Documenting details of HELP patients
- Communicating with HELP coordinator
- Adhering to volunteer role description, policies and procedures, and all health and safety requirements
Experience/Qualifications Required:
- Have good interpersonal skills to interact with patients and staff
- Be pleasant, caring, punctual, reliable, and trustworthy
- Be patient, caring and compassionate
- Be able to follow direction and possess good communication skills
- Demonstrates good judgment and work as part of a team
- Health Sciences experience is an asset
- Good organizational and time management skills
- Flexibility and patience
- Commit six months or more to volunteering 1-2 days a week for 2 plus hours
