Employment Opportunity: Immigrant Support Worker
The Antigonish Women’s Resource Centre and Sexual Assault Services Association (AWRCSASA) is a community-based organization that provides support services and programs for women and youth as well as for immigrants/newcomers and their families in the Antigonish and Guysborough areas. We are currently seeking a Support Worker for the Antigonish Guysborough Immigrant Support Program (AGISP).
The AWRCSASA is committed to being a workplace that is free of discrimination, values diversity and has a staff that is representative of the communities in which we work. We especially welcome applications from visible minority group members, Indigenous persons, newcomers to Canada, persons with disabilities, and members of sexual minority groups. Members of equity seeking groups are encouraged to self-identify on their application cover letter or resume.
The role of the Immigrant Support Worker is to assist newcomers in making plans for employment and education, and to provide information, settlement and problem-solving support. A key part of the work is meeting the unique needs of refugees with rural resettlement. The Immigrant Support Worker will work closely with the Program Coordinator to forge and maintain relationships with community groups, service providers and organizations in order to facilitate access to needed services. The Support Worker participates in organizing and facilitating programs and workshops, and establishing partnerships to build community capacity in supporting immigrants and newcomers. This position is based in Antigonish and will provide outreach through community partners in Guysborough County and Antigonish County.
The successful candidate will possess a degree in social work or a related field (or equivalent relevant experience), and will have experience providing support, counselling and advocacy. They should have strong written and verbal communication skills, and an ability to work with diverse populations and age groups. Candidates are expected to be familiar with Nova Scotia immigration policies and community resources. Some local travel and evening and weekend work will be required. Fluency in English is required and additional languages will be considered an asset.
