The Ministry of Social Services, Income Assistance Service Delivery Branch, is committed to investing in positive outcomes for clients in the areas of income support and services so clients can regain their financial independence to the best of their ability. We do this by providing financial supports and connecting clients to support services in their community. We meet their basic needs for food, shelter and clothing and develop collaborative, customized case plans.
Income Assistance workers are empathetic, compassionate, and non-judgmental collaborators with excellent communication skills who treat all people with dignity, respect, and objectivity. They accept and understand the importance of the client’s perspective in a client–friendly approach to case planning and are flexible when working with clients and their families and community organizations. They are reliable and adapt easily to changes in workload, policies and procedures in a continuously changing environment.
Income Assistance workers work closely with a diverse clientele to help them maximize their independence, autonomy, and quality of life by:
Meeting in person with clients using supportive interviewing and counselling techniques and methods; assessing client needs using various strength-based and solution-focused theories, models, and practices; meeting with clients in person to provide case management that incorporates the clients’ motivations for change, commitment, goals, and diverse needs; determining eligibility for Income Assistance benefits; identifying community referral services/resources; and working jointly with clients, other ministry partners and community organizations in planning for enhanced independence and self-sufficiency.
In this position, you will:
Effectively communicate with clients (both in person and written); meet with clients in person to provide case management/support and with other third parties; enjoy and value working with diverse and multi-cultural individuals/families; understand and adhere to applicable legislation, regulations, policies, and procedures; be proficient in conflict resolution; manage all client and work interactions and conflict in a calm, ethical, assertive, and respectful manner; and be required to work flexible hours that accommodate the needs of the clients and the program. You may be required to travel. Applicants must have a valid driver's license.
You will have the demonstrated ability to:
Effectively communicate in person with clients when conducting interviews, for supportive counselling, and in all written documentation and correspondence; face-to-face case management experience including interviewing, assessing, planning, and referring services and/or supports; work with diverse and multi-cultural individuals/families who may face multiple barriers and challenges such as addictions, mental illness, disability, and unemployment; understand, interpret, apply, and adhere to various procedures and legislation including acts, regulations, and policies; successfully complete mathematical calculations and operate computerized programs and databases; and manage change, stress and conflict in a calm, rational and respectful manner.
Typically, the knowledge for this position would be obtained through the completion of an undergraduate degree in Social Work, Indigenous Social Work, Sociology, Human Justice, Psychology, or a related course of study. You will have knowledge of:
  • Poverty and other socio-economic issues and how they impact on people;
  • Multi-cultural beliefs, values, and perspectives with particular emphasis on First Nations and Métis;
  • Systemic barriers that affect clients (addictions, health related issues, etc.);
  • Disabilities, including the impact of disability on the individual and disability supports and services; and
  • Case management concepts and techniques.

You will be citizen-centered and motivated to go the extra mile to understand client needs and circumstances as you assist individuals and families toward self-sufficiency.
