Job description

Position: Indigenous Community Advisor (One year part-time with possibility to move to full-time)

The Nipissing Wellness Ontario Health Team (NW OHT) has formed in response to the Ministry of Health’s ongoing restructuring of our provincial healthcare system. To date we are a collaborative group of 30+ partners and affiliates who are working together with patients, families, and caregivers, to enhance healthcare across the Nipissing region. We are looking to hire a team oriented, motivated individual with a working knowledge of the Indigenous healthcare systems to support meaningful engagement with our Indigenous partners and affiliates. The successful candidate will report to the NW OHT Executive Lead.

Responsibilities:

  • Resource dedicated to ensuring meaningful and well-coordinated engagement and communication.
  • Conduct an inventory of Indigenous cultural safety and trauma informed training, courses, and organizational practices within the NWOHT.
  • Assess health partners needs as they relate to Indigenous engagement.
  • Develop a quality management framework for the NWOHT and their partners to assess for organizational practices that promote engagement with Indigenous health partners and that increase access to Indigenous culturally safe and trauma informed care.
  • Work in close collaboration with NW OHT Executive, OHT members and Indigenous health partners.
  • Participate in Equity Council, Collaboration Council and other working groups, project groups, or committees as appropriate
  • Other duties as required.

Reportables and Deliverables:

§ Complete an environmental scan of NWOHT member organizations’ current Indigenous cultural safety and trauma-informed teachings, courses, and organizational practices

§ Support OHT members by curating a collection of resources that will be leveraged to enhance cultural safety and trauma-informed education and organizational practices across NWOHT member organizations

§ Provide knowledge and support to OHT members as they work to develop a comprehensive resource collection regarding Indigenous health, worldviews, multi-generational trauma and TRC

§ Support NWOHT efforts to collect information that defines the needs of members with respect to creating meaningful engagement with Indigenous communities in Nipissing.

§ Guide the development of quality assurance measures for Indigenous engagement and provision of culturally safe care.

§ Develop a quality management framework to facilitate assessment of NWOHT members’ organizational practices related to meaningful engagement

§ Participate in OHT planning and decision making and support ongoing learning; identifying opportunities that will promote growth and enhance engagement

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Education and Licensing:

  • Post-secondary diploma or undergraduate degree in a relevant field of study
  • Recognized cultural safety and trauma-informed education.
  • Driver’s License and ability to travel within the North Bay region.
  • Knowledge of Nishnaabemwin is a significant asset.

Experience:

Indigenous world view and two-eyed seeing as it relates to well-being.

Knowledge of and experience with Indigenous health services, systems, and structures

Preference to applicants who have provided previous cultural safety and trauma-informed education in a community or institutional setting.

Job Specific Competencies:

  • Exceptional interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills including the ability to demonstrate tact and diplomacy with diverse groups of stakeholders, including patients, front-line healthcare providers, community agencies, and healthcare administrators.
  • Willingness to work collaboratively as a member of a team.
  • Ability to multitask and set priorities, managing time effectively.
  • Possesses a high level of accountability and proven capability to identify opportunities, take initiative, and think through future implications.
  • Advanced computer skills an asset (Microsoft Office – PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and Adobe products).
  • Previous, relevant experience in healthcare context.

Knowledge

Awareness of OHTs and Connecting Care Act (2019)

Knowledge of Indigenous and First Nations values, customs, and beliefs

Knowledge of First Nation health services, systems, and structures

Microsoft Word, Outlook, MS Teams, Power Point, Excel

Video conferencing and virtual engagement platforms

Physical Environment & Working Conditions:

The work environment is currently virtual (subject to change) with a requirement for some travel within the Nipissing Wellness Ontario Health Team catchment. For virtual work we require that individuals have a private, dedicated workspace, free from distraction with a suitable internet connection to facilitate virtual meetings.

Job Type: Part-time

Expected hours: 20 – 35 per week
