The Opportunity
As a key member of the Legal Services team, this role is responsible for preparing, reviewing and registering legal documents in relation to planning, development, real property, leasing and for responding to various legal inquiries from Town staff, other governmental agencies and the public. The Law Clerk, Real Estate and Planning role is essential for the timely completion of development applications and acts as a contact and resource for Town staff who provide input on legal agreements. The individual in this role also maintains and updates the Legal Services division’s development and Real Estate files. The Law Clerk, Real Estate and Planning provides administrative support to the Deputy Town Solicitor and Assistant Town Solicitors, including coordinating meetings and recording instructions from client departments within the Town.
As the Law Clerk, Real Estate and Planning, you will perform the following duties, including but not limited to:
- Prepare, circulate and revise planning and development related agreements, reports, memos, leases, licenses, easements, encroachment agreements, agreements of purchase and sale, other contracts, by-laws and other legal documents arising out of planning applications, real property related matters, or other Town business
- Prepare and coordinate the registration of documents on title using Teraview software, Record and distribute required information following registration of documents to client departments
- Coordinate registrations of plans of subdivision/condominium with developers, their solicitors and the Region, including the preparation of all related agreements and Teraview documents
- Review draft M-plans and draft reference plans for compliance with Town and Land Registry Office requirements, and direct and review revisions where necessary
- Understand, apply and provide direction regarding the statutory requirements of planning legislation, such as the Planning Act, Building Code Act and the Ontario Heritage Act, and of Town bylaws relating to planning and development
- Review and interpret clauses in past agreements to ensure legal obligations have been fulfilled prior to assumption of subdivision or for release of securities
- Manage Application to Purchase process including responding to inquiries, circulations, title searches, preparation of correspondence and reports.
The Ideal Candidate
We are seeking a legal professional with a post-secondary diploma for Law Clerks or related legal field and a membership with ILCO. Our ideal candidate has a Minimum 5 years’ experience as a Law Clerk in a law firm or corporation dealing with Real Estate, planning and development matters.
The successful candidate for Law Clerk, Real Estate and Planning will be required to work a flexible schedule, including in the office, remotely and after hours (as required).
This position offers a salary range of $75,892.79 to $93,006.93 and a competitive benefits package.
Satisfactory passing of a criminal record check, and proof of qualifications will be required of any successful candidate(s) for this position.
