Reporting to the Project Manager, PDG – AAEP Project, is responsible for leading the Health and Safety (H&S) function for the Project Development Group’s (PDG) site team, ensuring compliance with Teck and PDG H&S Policies and Standards, Management System requirements and legal obligations, promoting continuous improvement, and encouraging a culture of courageous safety leadership across project personnel.
The Lead, H&S has a matrix reporting relationship to the Manager PDG, H&S, North America. Teamwork and proactive communication with both the Red Dog Operations (RDO) site H&S team and the broader PDG H&S functional team will be fundamental.
The successful candidate will work on rotation at the PDG AAEP project site at Red Dog Operations, Alaska.
Responsibilities
-Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental policies and procedures
-Demonstrate a strong record of leadership in health, safety and sustainability. Ensure activities are consistent with Teck’s policies and management systems, as guided by the Charter of Corporate Responsibility, the Code of Sustainable Conduct and the Health and Safety Policy
-Proactively engages and provides leadership for the team to drive continuous improvement of the H&S management system
-Supports and coordinates project implementation of PDG H&S programs
-Understands the principles of Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment and Risk Mitigation and more specifically:
-Continuously seeks opportunities to recognize HSE hazards and works to lead associated risks in the workplace
-Works with Managers and Project Leads to implement hazard identification processes and appropriate risk mitigation measures, reviews and modifies specific processes as required
-Develops and reviews Safe Work Procedures for the broad spectrum of activities occurring within the scope of the project
-Completes inspections, verifications and audits of worksites and equipment
-Leads all aspects of the implementation and execution of Critical Control Verification processes
-Supports the project leadership in performing projects through Risk Assessments, Inductions and Emergency Response Plans
-Coordinates and maintains relevant training for team members, including conducting routine ‘needs assessments’ to establish appropriate training
-Documents all workplace H&S incidents and investigations and applies corrective actions when needed
-Reports on leading and lagging indicators & project metrics using available PDG and corporate systems and tools; promotes the development of new data capture systems and innovation in field processes
-Develops and handles annual H&S Budgets and input on Project budgets
-Coordinates the collection of baseline environmental data for projects and maintains environmental monitoring programs as per corporate guidelines and regulatory requirements
-Promotes the focus on Occupational Health and Hygiene exposure recognition, monitoring and mitigation; responsible for identifying all exposure groups and handling subsequent mitigation measures
-Maintains the Project legal obligations register and coordinates associated compliance activities
Qualifications - Education and Experience
-Certificate or Diploma in OHS is preferred; however, previous in-field mining or construction safety experience would be considered
-A minimum of 7 years of H&S experience in the mining or heavy construction industries
-Basic understanding of regulatory framework associated with appropriate local, national and international safety and environmental regulations
-Proven understanding of the regulatory framework associated with appropriate local, national and international H&S legislation
-Intermediate to advanced knowledge of the principles of Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment and Risk Mitigation
-Proven auditing and inspection skills
-Proven track record of engaging with multiple collaborators both internally across Teck and externally with government agencies
-Excellent oral and written communication skills
-Intermediate-level skills in Microsoft Office products
-English language – proficient

Salary Range: $101,000 - $125,000 
The actual base salary offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
