Position Overview

The Operations & Maintenance team in the Facilites Managment is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Locksmith.

The Locksmith position provides specialized lock and key services to the University. The primary purpose of this position is supporting the Operations & Maintenance team in completing daily service requests. Direction and Guidance on the day-to-day accountabilities will be assigned by the Lead Hand - Lockshop. This position reports to the Supervisor, Facilities Management Operations.

This position requires work to be carried out with the following conditions: within confined spaces, scaffolds, and lifts of heights up to 4 meters, heavy lifting up to and including 25 kilograms, performing physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.

There will be year-round indoor and outdoor responsibilities with controlled hazardous environments. The incumbent must have mechanical ability, be able to use hand and power tools, be able to work on ladders at various heights, and demonstrate a safety-conscious attitude.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Ensuring the proper installation, repair, maintenance, adjustment and operation of all lock and key systems (i.e., locks, keys, door closers, hinges, electrical release mechanisms, doors, etc.)
  • Changing lock key combinations by inserting new pins into locks
  • Designing complex master key systems for the institution
  • Key duplication
  • Servicing key equipment
  • Making key for locks
  • Opening cylinders when keys are not available
  • Preparing master keys from code
  • Door closers and emergency exit hardware
  • Replacing hinges or re-aligning doors, security bars and electric strikes
  • Contributing knowledge and experience in the areas of Institutional Locksmithing, Master Key techniques and practices are an asset
  • Repairing, maintaining, and installing door hardware devices
  • Direct communication with customers, contractors, suppliers and trade staff to successfully complete tasks
  • Performing work in compliance with applicable codes and according to the University established standards, policies, and procedures
  • Monitoring, and critical thinking skills
  • Performs other job-related duties of comparable importance, difficulty and responsibility as required

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Provincial or Interprovincial Locksmith Trade Certification and 3-5 years of experience in industrial, commercial, and institutional Locksmithing. A 2nd year Apprenticeship in Locksmithing may be considered. Apprentices must provide evidence to demonstrate they are near or at the 1560 hours/year of on-the-job training progress that will lead to the completion of a period of the program to earn their Journeyperson certificate.
  • Must be bondable and have (or) in the process of gaining or be able to obtain a Solicitor General Locksmith License.
  • Must possess and demonstrate thorough knowledge of recognized practices, techniques, tools, and safety procedures associated with the locksmith trade.
  • Must be able to read and interpret blueprints, schematic diagrams, shop drawings, specifications, and maintenance manuals.
  • Ability to organize workload, work under periodic pressure and complete assignments with minimal supervision under the guidance of the Lead Hand ¿ Lockshop.
  • Must possess knowledge of various building and fire codes relative to door hardware applications.
  • Experience and knowledge of electronic access control systems is considered an asset.
  • Must be able and willing to work in a variety of environments, including office settings, classrooms, research laboratories including areas that support animals, mechanical rooms, service tunnels etc.
  • Must be able to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
  • Must have a Positive Can-Do attitude and can work with others in a team environment including mentoring and sharing knowledge with co-workers.
  • Must have a proven record of upgrading and updating applicable trade skills and staying current with industry trends.
  • Must have proven record of providing superior customer service including customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Must be able to listen to and understand information and ideas presented and have ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand.
  • Must be able to use Microsoft office suite including word, e-mail, mobile communication devices, such as iPhone, smartphone etc.
  • Must hold a valid minimum Class 5 Alberta Driver's License with less than 7 demerit points. Learner's, probationary, graduated license, or motorcycle/moped only license will not be acceptable. A drivers abstract will be requested during candidate screening.
