Reporting to the Director, Environmental Performance, the Manager, Environmental Performance is responsible for advancing Teck’s environmental governance and supporting both projects and operations with meeting environmental compliance requirements and performance targets. 

 

The successful candidate will provide strong technical expertise related to environmental compliance, performance, and risk management and be accountable for improving systems to manage and report on environmental and sustainability performance with an emphasis on maintaining compliance and managing key risks. 

 

This position is global in scope and will interact with all business units across multiple geographic areas that Teck explores and operates within.
 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures.
  • Foster a team culture of inclusivity and collaboration through mentorship, empowerment, and engagement.
  • Maintains strong relationships with Operation environmental leads to support the achievement of environmental objectives, including support for technical issues, meeting permit/compliance requirements, and managing risks.
  • Manages Teck’s environmental data collection and reporting process to support internal reporting and Annual Sustainability Report 
  • Leads and manages performance reporting for the environmental component of the Teck Annual Sustainability Bonus Program. 
  • Prepares reports and briefings for senior management, Operations, and Teck’s Board of Directors.
  • Leads Teck wide environmental Community of Practice engagement on Air Quality Management which shares leading practices across the company and supports the development of Teck environmental professionals.
  • Leads and reviews investigations of environmental incidents and trains others to facilitate these investigations. 
  • Supports the maintenance and efficient implementation of Teck’s Sustainability Management Standards and other environmental management programs.
  • Assists in the development of company guidelines, procedures, and standards for key areas of Environmental Performance and management. 
  • Supports required training and capacity building with Operations as required to effectively apply relevant guidelines, procedures, and standards. 
  • Interacts with industry associations and government agencies on the development of or revisions to environmental regulations.
  • Remains current on environmental issues that have the potential to impact Teck’s reputation and sustainability.
  • Provides timely assistance on an as-needed basis to operations.
  • Ensure annual budgeting and scheduling meet business commitments. 
     

Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or science in an environmental-related field.  
  • Professional designation (e.g. P.Eng., R.P.Bio.) preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience providing leadership on Environmental Performance in the mining industry.
  • A high level of scientific knowledge and practical experience in an environmental specialty pertinent to mining such as environmental management systems, regulatory approvals, water quality management, air quality management, mine waste management, ecological or human health risk assessments, noise, or biodiversity.
  • Advanced written, verbal and interpersonal communications and presentation skills in both formal and informal settings, preferably in both English and Spanish.
  • Efficient analytical and quantitative skills with advanced level experience in environmental data management and reporting, including database systems.
  • Expertise in developing and maintaining environmental and risk management systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with people at all levels of the organization, an ability to influence outcomes, and an ability to manage conflict.
  • Experience in operational-level environment functions, preferably in base metal mining operations.
  • Strong leadership and management skills including ability to manage a technically-diverse staff and consultants to effectively leverage skillsets and provide additional support where necessary.
  • A strategic thinker who can see the big picture, identify appropriate strategies and translate them into action. 
  • Ability to identify and solve problems with logical and appropriate solutions in a timely and decisive manner. 
  • Motivated self-starter who can manage several projects simultaneously and adapt to changing situations.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 30% of the time.

Salary Range: $141,000 - $175,000

 

The actual base salary offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
