Position Summary

The Manager-Public and Government Relations, is responsible for providing key information and advice to Peel Regional Police's (PRP) Chief's Management Group and Senior Leadership Team on issues related to public affairs, strategic communication, and Government Relations. Further, identifying and developing Government Relations strategies that align with the organization's strategic plan and priorities, and advocacy and engagement of elected and Government officials on priorities and goals.


Responsibilities


What will your typical day look like?

  • Provides advice, strategic direction and/or briefs to the Director-Public Affairs, Chief Management Group, and Senior Leadership Team on public affairs, Government Relations, community priorities and issues pertaining to policing. Provides strategic and operational leadership to the Strategic Communications and Public and Media Relations teams for the development and delivery of communications, for issues management effective crisis communications management, reputation and image management for written and social media.
  • Provides for staff development and training, establishes performance standards and conducts performance evaluations, with direct input into hiring decisions and taking responsibility for team results.
  • Provides written reports, summaries and presentations for both internal and external use as identified by the Director- Public Affairs.
  • Develops and executes comprehensive public affairs strategies and communication plans to enhance the police service's reputation, increase public trust, and promote understanding of its mission, values, and initiatives.
  • Provides strategic support on current and future objectives that includes consultation, advice, crisis communications management, event management, issues management and messaging.
  • Develop and executes comprehensive public affairs strategies and communication plans to enhance the police service's reputation, increase public trust, and promote understanding of its mission, values, and initiatives.
  • Initiates partnerships and develops relationships with elected officials, government officials within relevant ministries and agencies, and other key stakeholders to support strategic alignment on community priorities and policing.
  • Identifies and manages funding and grant opportunities provided by all levels of government; monitoring and tracking regional, provincial and federal election cycles and the activities of mayors, councillors and all major political parties and priorities as it pertains to policing and Peel Region.
  • Oversees the development and distribution of press releases, media advisories, and other communications materials to ensure accuracy, clarity, and timely delivery.
  • Provides guidance and support in the development of key internal and external messaging that encompasses media, community, public and Government Relations through collaboration with the Manager, Corporate Communications.
  • Monitors and manages issues relating to Government Relations and evolving developments, and provides insight and guidance on communication strategy and direction.
  • Supports the Peel Regional Police brand through the identification of government priorities that contribute to effective communications that support ongoing engagement and contribute to positive community relationships.
  • Provides both strategic and tactical communications expertise to assist in achieving support from regional, provincial, federal funding opportunities and grants.
  • Monitors media coverage and public sentiment related to the police service and provides regular reports to senior management, identifying potential issues or areas for improvement.
  • Collaborates with internal departments to ensure consistent messaging and accurate communications across all platforms, including social media, websites, newsletters, and press releases.
  • Stays abreast of emerging trends, best practices, and legislative changes in public affairs, media relations, and Government Relations, and make recommendations to senior management for continuous improvement.
  • Serves as the main point of contact for media inquiries, coordinating responses, and organizing press conferences or interviews as required. Proactively engages with media outlets to promote positive coverage and manage potential crises.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.


Qualifications

You are someone with:

  • A University degree in Political Science, Public Administration, Business Administration, Public Relations or equivalent training, or an equivalent combination of formal education and experience.
  • A minimum of eight years experience in direct project management/planning, at least three of which have been at a managerial level or have demonstrated experience in managing resources, budgets and communications management
  • Demonstrated knowledge of all current relevant media including paper, email, internet, social media, etc.
  • Demonstrated managerial skills
  • Advanced oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Exceptional influencing and negotiation skills
  • Demonstrated time management and project management skills
  • Well-developed analytical and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office Software Applications
  • Demonstrated strategic and innovative thinking

What we offer

The salary range for this permanent, full-time position is $146,975.00 - $174,044.00 per annum. Peel Regional Police offers a highly competitive compensation package; applicants will be considered for the top end of the range ($160,511.00 - $174,044.00) based on experience. The salary is complemented with a comprehensive benefit program, including employer-paid Health/Dental and Life Insurance; and the OMERS Pension Plan effective upon hire. This position allows for the flexibility of hybrid remote working arrangements.
