About the Opportunity

The Manager, Government Relations (Federal, Ontario & Quebec) is a member of the Pathways Alliance external relations team and plays a key role in supporting the development and implementation of the Pathways Government Relations strategy. You will thrive on staying informed about and helping to influence current and potential legislation at the Federal level and in Ontario & Quebec that will impact Pathways’ success, and communicating and facilitating collaboration with government officials to contribute to the establishment of a favorable perception of Pathways and the Canadian oil sands operations.

About the Role

The government and community relations team is part of the external relations function within the Pathways Alliance, which is lead by the Vice President, External Relations and governed by two primary member steering groups: the Policy and Government Relations Steering Group and the Communications Steering Group. The Manager, Government Relations will report to the Director, Government Relations.

The Manager will work closely with the VP, External Relations and other members of the External Relations team as well as the steering groups, working groups and task groups composed of representatives of member companies, typically selected for expertise in the group’s area of focus.

This position is based in either Ontario or Quebec.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Assist with developing and maintaining a comprehensive Government Relations strategy for Pathways Alliance.
  • Monitor government policy and activities and identify risks, opportunities, and issues relevant to Pathway’s goals and objectives at the federal level and in Quebec and Ontario.
  • Provide analysis of current and emerging government policies and advocate on behalf of Pathways on a variety of issues to advance objectives and strategy at the federal level and in Quebec and Ontario.
  • Participate and actively represent Pathways with various industry associations and governmental committees.
  • Focus on strong communication and building rapport with key stakeholders in Quebec and Ontario by conducting issue tracking, ongoing engagement and regular information sharing.
  • Assist the members in developing and maintaining strong relationships with government and community officials and key public influencers.
  • Additional duties and support as required.

Education and Experience:

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary degree in business, political science, economics, social sciences, or a related discipline is required.
  • 10+ years experience within government or a Government Relations role with a significant focus on engagement at various levels.

Skills

  • Proven track record and success working with the federal and provincial governments.
  • A solid network of key stakeholders, including both federal and provincial government officials, relevant agencies and industry associations.
  • A strong understanding of the political process in Canada at both provincial and federal levels coupled with an understanding of the political landscape.
  • A solid understanding and appreciation for government policies and political issues relevant to the energy sector.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills in both French and English is required.
  • Results oriented and delivery focused; able to independently organize, manage, prioritize and deliver high quality results on multiple assignments under tight deadlines.
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office products such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Demonstrated ability to succeed in a dynamic environment, working successfully across the organization, both independently and as a member of a team.

Compensation: Competitive compensation based on skill set and experience. Assignments or secondments from member companies are possible.

Location: There is flexibility for the role to be located in either Ontario or Quebec.
