The Role:
The Managing Director, Canada, is responsible for leading and driving the growth of Equinix Canada. The MD will lead the cohesive in-country team to ensure alignment with global strategy, drive retail growth, develop interconnections hubs and build deeper and broader ecosystems in an inclusive organizational environment where everyone feels safe, belongs, and matters.
Responsibilities:
Develop the Market:
Own the 5-year vision for the country/market, market opportunity, and competitive position
Lead development of a 1–3-year metro strategy plan for each metro to include objectives for retail verticals, networks, and hyper-scale
Partner with Corporate Development / Commercial Finance / Sales to develop, drive, and execute the market development plan and metro strategy
Drive retail growth and retail leadership in the market
Lead the Team:
Lead the country cross-functional team, ensuring team cohesion and end-to-end alignment and delivery on strategy
Ensure personal alignment with retail focus and global strategy
Nurture, represent, and grow Equinix culture
Identify, motivate, sponsor, develop, and highlight key talent
Oversight of market execution, including financial performance
Local legal responsible representative of Equinix in the market
Flag risks to the delivery of financial, business, and organizational strategy
Work with regional function leaders to build a high-performing local team
Responsible for organizational health in the country, including eSat and strategic alignment
Ensure all employees understand our Purpose
Build an engaged, diverse workforce and inclusive workplace environment, and empower all employees to make decisions at the right levels
Lead and manage through any crisis
Sell the Platform/Evolve the Business:
Actively support the development of key customers, channel partners, and Strategic Alliances to build out eco-systems in market
Build strong relationships with government bodies, the press and industry analysts/investors
Provide competitive market insights to commercial solutions on deals/opportunities and validate the team's market view
Provide counsel on deals and business decisions
Proactively support the xScale ramp-up in the local market, engaging across stakeholder groups
Support leaders and teams in Customer & Revenue, Design & Construction, Finance, and Legal teams to drive improvement in the velocity of decision-making, shorten execution time for joint-venture agreements (JVs), capture customer demand, and ensure the timely and cost-effective delivery of our xScale data center builds
Work with the business to maintain yield
Drive and actively support work efforts that improve interconnection density and increase adoption of Fabric
Contribute to Region and Global Success:
Support/Lead Global/Regional projects and programs (churn mitigation, AR/AP escalation, fabric adoption, DI&B)
Align and represent global/regional strategy
Achieve regional P&L
Drive export growth
Be the local ambassador for initiatives that scale the core business, e.g., Horizon
Be an ambassador for digital services in the market, including Equinix Fabric, Equinix Metal, and Network Edge, to deliver our distinctive core values in new ways
Knowledge and Experience sought:
Ability to determine and present a clear strategic direction for the country market, emphasizing enterprise/retail business through channel partnerships
15+ years of demonstrated track record in general management as an MD or enterprise sales leader
Expert knowledge of the Canadian market
A proven and entrepreneurial General Manager with previous P&L responsibility, ideally with experience gained at a US/international technology company, would be ideal
Knowledge of the business challenges facing enterprise executives driving needs for interconnection services
Experience selling to various industries, including network and mobile providers, cloud and IT services, content providers, financial services, automotive, etc
Experience in establishing and scaling direct enterprise sales and partner models
Proven ability to see the ‘bigger long-term picture’ and think strategically while achieving short-term results
Experience with recurring revenue, sales complexity, solution selling, and readying platforms for B2B
Respect for the Equinix culture and that of the team
Proactive, collaborative, and able to work comfortably in a non-hierarchical context
Ability to work autonomously in a high-pressure environment
Strong oral and written communication skills; fluency in English and French
A degree or equivalent, preferably in a technical discipline, is preferred. An MBA is an advantage but not required
