What does your day at GIP look like?

Terminal Operations: oversight of all key activities involved in the operation of the facility to ensure business continuity, including.

  • Receipt of asphalt cement deliveries by truck, rail car, and marine vessels,
  • Loading of tanker trucks with asphalt cement, emulsion, and calcium chloride products for customer deliveries,
  • Operation of hot oil heaters and distribution system to heat tanks and piping to required temperatures.
  • Operation of steam boiler system to heat asphalt cement rail cars to required unloading temperatures,
  • Manufacturing of polymer-modified asphalt cement and emulsion products,
  • Receiving, blending, and shipping calcium chloride products,
  • Completing tank transfers between tanks to ensure materials are available to support the operations listed above.

Identify and Implement Process Improvements

  • Manages process to understand supply forecasts, plans production and inventory to meet demand, and ensures that transportation for on-time delivery is arranged.

Manage Inbound Receiving

  • Develops and executes inbound material receiving plans including appropriate allocation of tank space for different materials, and storage of packaged materials. Ensures incoming trucks, rail cars, marine vessels, and packaged materials are unloaded efficiently.

Lead Quality Management

  • Assures an effective Quality program at the Terminal such that products are supplied within specification, meeting customer requirements, and in accordance with ISO requirements.

Effective Inventory Management

  • Implements effective inventory management practices.
  • Ensures inbound and outbound materials are weighed (or otherwise appropriately gauged) and ticketed.
  • Ensures products and inventory drawn down for production are recorded and tracked.
  • Manages and measures inventory on a monthly cycle and reconciles physical inventory balances with book value.

Prudent Environmental Management

  • Operates with environmental due diligence seeking to avoid spills.
  • Complies with Ministry of Environment ECA approval requirements and maintains required records.
  • Prepares and operates in accordance with Spill Emergency, Oil Pollution Emergency, Oil Pollution Prevention, and Dock Security Plans
  • Obtains government approval of plans as required. Conducts spill and security exercises to satisfy plan requirements.

Efficient Equipment Maintenance

  • Assumes on-site responsibility for the planning and execution of inspection, preventive maintenance, repair and replacement of equipment.
  • Collaborates with Engineering Manager to ensure that Capital Expenditure upgrades are effectively completed, on-time and on-budget.

Team Leadership

  • Recruits, retains and motivates a high performing team.
  • Manages a team of both unionized and non-unionized employees in accordance with employment standards and the Collective Agreement, including management, supervisors, labourers, operators, welders, electricians, insulators, administrators and truck drivers.
  • Oversees terminal staffing, including seasonal hiring and layoff in accordance with operational and budgetary requirements.
  • Ensures that employees ae cross-trained in the different operational terminal processes.
  • Effectively manages union relations, handles union issues that escalate to the management level, and seeks corporate and legal guidance when necessary.
  • May participate in union negotiations and/or preparation for thereof.
  • Oversees timekeeping processes to ensure that weekly and bi-weekly payroll is entered in the Synerion payroll system.

Health and Safety Operational Excellence: champion and promote a safety culture through active management of a robust Health and Safety Program which includes.

  • Reporting and investigation of all safety incidents and near-misses to ensure that all corrective actions are implemented,
  • Ensuring all work is done in accordance with Safe Work Practices and in accordance with requirements for operations involving activities such as WHMIS, Working at Heights, Confined Space Entry, and Lock-Out-Try-Out-Tag-Out
  • Completion of required Inspections, Daily Huddles, and regular Joint Health Safety Committees Meetings
  • Oversight of employee safety training and records using our online system Flex
  • Following through with disciplinary action when necessary.
  • Ensuring improvements to the safety program are identified and implemented.

Sound Financial Management

  • Prudently manages operational spending and costs.
  • Identifies and implements efficiencies to drive improvements in key performance indicators and cost reductions.
  • Ensures that key performance indicators are tracked and communicated, and employees are empowered to drive improvements to our processes.
  • Ensures terminal-based accounting functions are completed accurately and on time, including Ticketing customer shipments, generating purchase orders, signing packing slips (bills of lading) and confirming that the goods received match the information on the slip, receiving goods in JD Edwards, preparing invoices and packing slips for next level approval and vouchering, etc.
  • Completes month-end reporting including reports for inventory, production, raw material use, throughput, energy consumption, key performance indicators, and operational reports. Reviews and analyzes operational metrics and costs.
  • Provides input and information required for the preparation of operating and capex budgets.

Enough about us, let’s talk about you.

  • Post-secondary degree, and a minimum of five years’ experience in a manufacturing or construction environment (an exceptional track record may supersede the post-secondary education requirement)
  • Strong understanding of liquid processing and equipment (tanks, piping, pumps, mixers, process heaters, heat exchangers etc.)
  • Proven leadership capabilities to lead a mid-sized team of employees, and to organize and prioritize many simultaneous activities to meet customer and operational requirements.
  • Knowledge of asphalt cement products, emulsions, and polymer modification is beneficial but not required.
  • Computer literacy with the ability to use common software programs such as Microsoft Excel and Word, as well as the aptitude to learn ERP software (JD Edwards), and process software (tank level monitoring, process temperature monitoring, etc.), and process controllers.
  • Results-driven with an ability to deliver success in a fast-paced environment.
  • Outcome-focused, critical thinker with the ability to analyse and visualize to ensure continuous improvement across our business.
  • Ability to connect and interact with people to seek different perspectives.
  • Superb communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong ability to effectively prioritize and manage multiple competing priorities.
  • Demonstrate versatility and resourcefulness in overcoming business challenges.
