OUTDOOR PROGRAM LEADER/CAMP COUNSELLOR

The mission of Kamp Kiwanis is to empower youth to explore, think critically, connect with their communities, and to make the most of life for themselves and others. Our mission drives our programming while having fun, being safe, and nurturing growth. Our age focus is elementary school students (ages 9-12) as well as Kamp Kiwanis leadership participants (ages 13-18). Kamp Kiwanis was founded in 1951, and offers a summer camp experience at a 100% subsidy for every 9-12 year old who attends Kamp Kiwanis.
We are currently seeking an energetic and inspirational Outdoor Program Leader/Counsellor to join our team from the end of February until the end of August. This is a diverse role which changes between the different seasons. Throughout both seasons you will work closely with the entire staff team to provide fun and meaningful programs to all camp participants and clients of Kamp Kiwanis. You will be helping to run our Outdoor School and Summer Camp programs (see specific job responsibilities below). This is a seasonal position in an outdoor setting where staff are required to live on-site in provided staff accommodation, excluding breaks between sessions (opportunity to live on site during breaks is available). Staff accommodation includes meals that are provided during working hours.
DAYS OF WORK
Staff will be working approximately 5-7 days a week with long work days (16 hours consecutively) with irregular hours including evenings and weekends - Monday to Friday from February-End of June and then 5-7 days a week from July-End of August. Days of work may shift due to changing circumstances.

GENERAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform regular cleaning tasks to ensure camp adheres to a high standard of cleanliness
- Ensure the safety of participants (physically and emotionally) including but not limited to general supervision and problem solving
- Work as part of a team and independently in a variety of outdoor and indoor environments
- Develop and lead outdoor recreation activities (i.e. archery, shelter building, camp wide games, etc.)
- Develop and assist with online Programs as applicable (campfires, etc.)
- 24-hour supervision of participants including sleeping in the same room or building when required
- Additional on-going development, maintenance, set up and take down of program materials
- Enforce and follow Kamp Kiwanis policies and procedures
- Assist with the rental program when applicable
- Occasionally support food service staff making meals, serving food, and other kitchen duties
JOB SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead and assist with leading both overnight and day Outdoor School Programs
- Communication with clients and teachers
- Assist with Kamp Kiwanis leadership programs when applicable
- Check in campers and ride the bus with participants to and from Calgary in the summer
- Leading and assisting with various summer camp activities (archery, swimming, hikes, camping trips, campfire songs, canoeing, wide games, crafts, etc.)
REQUIRED ATTRIBUTES
- Be able to work long days (16 hours consecutively) with irregular hours including evenings and weekends
- Willing to live outside the city and on-site during the work week
- Strong communication, conflict resolution and leadership skills
- Eager to work in an outdoor environment for large portions of the day and night
- Proven track record working independently and in a team environment
- Mature, positive and responsible attitude
- Enjoy living and cooperating in community setting
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum of 18 years of age by the commencement of employment
- Police Security Clearance and Vulnerable Sector check specific to Kamp Kiwanis (employment is conditional upon receiving this)
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR (by start of employment)
- Experience supervising youth is required (experience in an educational, recreational, overnight camp or camp in an outdoor setting are an asset)
- Working towards or completion of post-secondary education in child or youth care, education, kinesiology, outdoor pursuits, recreation or a related field is an asset
- Any additional certifications are an asset and may include but are not limited to; Bronze Cross or National lifeguard service (NLS), 40hr Advanced Wilderness First Aid, Paddle Canada Instructor, and any of the Outdoor Council of Canada (OCC) field leader certifications
