The Plant Engineer role for our Cavalier Energy Centre (east of Strathmore) is an incredible opportunity to do rewarding work in one of Alberta’s best natural gas combined cycle power generating facilities, and sleep in your own bed every night!
Commute to and from work in the opposite direction of the traffic, and only make that drive on average 3 days per week. Our hybrid work schedule means you work from home on most Mondays and Fridays. This is a great plant with a great team, a good portion of which have been working there since it opened in 2001. This pivotal role serves as the on-site single point of contact for the engineering needs of the facility. Through close collaboration with Operations, Maintenance, and Management at their host facility as well as colleagues on the fleet engineering team, the Plant Engineer works as part of the overall Generation team to maximize facility performance, availability, and reliability.
Major Responsibilities:
  • Provides on-site engineering support and troubleshooting, engaging the fleet engineering team for support as required.
  • Accountable for ensuring that plant modifications, updates, and improvements are undertaken using sound engineering principles and due diligence in accordance with ENMAX procedures and processes.
  • Accountable for ensuring that plant processes and work conform to ENMAX quality standards (PEIMP, PSMP, EQMP, etc.).
  • Manage Pipeline Integrity Management Program (PLIMP) and support Pipeline Operations & Maintenance Management (POMM) for the facility.
  • Works to define, inspect, document and generate follow-up activities on service and reliability related findings to maximize facility availability and minimize life cycle costs.
  • Collaborates in the development of mid and long-term capital and asset management plans to optimize the facilities lifecycle performance and costs.
  • Accountable for supporting Supply Chain Management in evaluating and recommending suppliers capable of providing services, parts and materials required for operational and capital work undertaken at the facility.
  • Accountable for providing feedback regarding engineering and compliance related budget items for the facilities operations and maintenance budgets.
  • Supports the development of fleet standards and procedures in area of expertise and contributes to audits, inspections and assessments for continuous improvement.
  • Accountable for the management of facility technical documentation including drawings and technical manuals.
  • Accountable for the development and implementation of detailed engineering reports, equipment status reports, capital planning and variance reports.
Education Required:
  • B.Sc. degree in Mechanical Engineering or other equivalent.
  • Registration with APEGA as professional Engineer.
  • Specialized courses in project management considered an asset.
Qualifications & Experience:
  • 10 years’ experience as a registered engineer with at least 5 of those years as a practicing professional engineer in the power industry.
  • Experience in equipment construction and commissioning.
  • Comprehensive understanding of power plant systems including combustion turbine technology, heat recovery/boiler operation, balance of plant equipment.
  • Understanding of long-term asset management principles including risk management, reliability, value assessment and continuous improvement.
  • Experience in overhauling and troubleshooting rotating and/or electrical equipment.
  • Ability and experience executing on complex projects.
  • Strong understanding of computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) particularly IBM Maximo®.
